I don't know why more people don't consider the viola for playing fiddle tunes - maybe not for a crowded dance hall, but you could stick a pick-up/pre-amp on it & plug it in if you really need loud projection.
Here's a beautiful Baroque style viola & traditional Scottish fiddle tunes.
The Ewie with the Crooked Horn, In Dispraise of whisky, The Favourite Dram, Andrew Carr - on viola with unwound gut on the A,D,and G strings & a baroque bow!
So, a strathspey & 3 slip jigs!
Sheet music for ALL of these can be found at thesession.org!
...I'm going to have to ban myself from YouTube

@ABitRusty -
Yep, a year ago.
Was so cool I posted in the Irish/Scottish genre - with more good stuff!
For Viola (or 5 String Violin) & Cello Thread
🤔... I thought I also posted more of Helen Bell's videos somewhere else and linked all to the Viola section - maybe not. 🥴
Thanx for bringing it up!

Here's a Viola tutorial by Jim Cook for, "Lanigan's Ball" - it's a Jig (Fiddleman Dan)!
I'd like to point out that the video may be an innate Orchestra teacher view. IMHO - nobody plays this with so many even, single bow strokes, but this tutorial is good for learning the fingering.
Anyway, sheet music for Lanigan's Ball!
There are many tutorials for Jig bowing on YouTube.
I will recommend Jason's tutorial on Jig Bowing Techniques, because he not only covers bowing rhythm, but also slurs.
...always wise to find a variety of musicians playing an Irish tune - to hear the differences, plus gives you ideas on how to play it.

Have to share a few more jigs I found played on Viola!
The first jig is called The Sweet Briar. I got it from my Cousin Méabh Mulligan on concertina. Liam O'Connor and Sean McKeon recorded it on Dublin Made Me and Nuadán also recorded it on their album Dén Díobháil. The second jig is called The Hair Fell Off My Coconut. I associate it with the great Fermanagh accordion player Martin Treacy. Martin thought [taught] me this tune during the Willie Clancy Summer School years ago on the melodeon.
Always LOVED this Jig, "The Cliffs of Moher" (folkviola) - even better on VIOLA!
Sheet music for this jig - also at thesession.org!
Btw, I did NOT check to see if any of the sheet music for these jigs needs to be transposed lower for viola... so, if anyone needs help - let me know!
Want to practice a little fiddle bowing rhythm on Viola?
Play along with this catchy tune, "Goose and Common"!
More GREAT VIOLA fiddling at the folkviola YT Channel!
Folk Viola has sheet music - arrangements for Viola to buy.

Want to try another beautiful fiddle tune on the VIOLA?
The Black Swan On The Turlough (lake) - composed by Michael McGoldrick & also played on VIOLA by Dezi Donnelly!

🤔... well, not seeing this video display in the post - but it will play on YT. I was surprised how slowly they played this tune... very nice!
