I don't know why more people don't consider the viola for playing fiddle tunes - maybe not for a crowded dance hall, but you could stick a pick-up/pre-amp on it & plug it in if you really need loud projection.
Here's a beautiful Baroque style viola & traditional Scottish fiddle tunes.
...I'm going to have to ban myself from YouTube

@ABitRusty -
Yep, a year ago.
Was so cool I posted in the Irish/Scottish genre - with more good stuff!
For Viola (or 5 String Violin) & Cello Thread
🤔... I thought I also posted more of Helen Bell's videos somewhere else and linked all to the Viola section - maybe not. 🥴
Thanx for bringing it up!

Here's a Viola tutorial by Jim Cook for, "Lannigan's Ball" - it's a Jig (Fiddleman Dan)!
I'd like to point out that the video may be an innate Orchestra teacher view.
IMHO - nobody plays this with so many even, single bow strokes, but this tutorial is good for learning the fingering.
There are many tutorials for Jig bowing on YouTube.
I will recommend Jason's tutorial on Jig Bowing Techniques, because he not only covers bowing rhythm, but also slurs.
...always wise to find a variety of musicians playing an Irish tune - to hear the differences, plus gives you ideas on how to play it.
