I am so excited for the Christmas project! I am chomping at the bit to get started!!!
I love O Come, O Come Emmanuel. Lovely and something everyone can play!
Other suggestions that I think are beautiful for a small orchestra:
Angels We Have Heard on High (the parts allow for different levels of ability)
It Came Upon a Midnight Clear (quite easy to play)
Oh Come All Ye Faithful (has a nice punch to it, driving without being "in your face")
O Little Town of Bethlehem (excellent dynamics!)
The First Noel (easy to play)
God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen (peppy, lots of interest but not hard to play)
Thanks so much for doing this!!! I want to do a spring project, too! I think a great theme for late spring would be movie themes. There are plenty of easy themes that people would recognize, and we could have fun with!

Feeling a strong preference (maybe because we're staying in minor) that stepping DOWN for the 2nd play thru - sounds better.
Interesting. No offence to Pierre, but I found it a bit of a dreary modal dirge and feel that going down will only make it worse.
...kinda feels if we modulate 'UP', it should be to something slightly more uplifting.
Good point, in light of my above comment. But does that mean you agree with me?
But ignore me - I've only listened to the synthesised version (which perhaps created most of the dreary feel) and haven't yet played it through.
However, I'm disappearing for about 10 days, so I won't get back to you for a while.
I'm confused. I never mentioned going down. I wrote to modulate up a 5th. Am I missing something? Not understanding you guys? What is it that you want? I didn't get offended but I don't understand.
Sorry, Pierre, my bad.
I must have skimmed this post and thought it was you who were suggesting modulating down (from Em to Dm)
Now I think I'm very confused. In my post I'm basically saying I'm not keen on the music, and I'm not keen on ELCBK's wanting to modulate down a tone. Pierre mistakenly assumed I was criticising him for that latter point, and I just automatically apologised assuming that Pierre was justified in feeling criticised.
Anyways, it's still August. I am not in the mood for Halloween; I am not on the mood for Thanksgiving; I am not in the mood for Christmas; I am not in the mood for tabloids to talk about winter heating allowances (yet).
I am in the mood for an Indian summer, since we aren't going to have a proper summer this year in the UK (but the tropical strom tail ends are arriving here already, so I'm not holding my breath)

@Fiddlerman
I love O Come, O Come Emmanuel. Again, I feel that would be a wonderful choice.
This piece has a majesty, beauty and joy to it that expresses the essence of Christmas for me. It must have some appeal since the melody has survived for more than a thousand years.
Thank you for your dedication to these Christmas projects, @Fiddlerman. You always create something spectacular! And thank you for the early start that really helps those of us with busy schedules.

Just because I'm not yet keen on this piece doesn't mean I'd vote against it. If I were told it's done and dusted, I'd practise it and record it. That's what it means to belong to an orchestra!
To be slightly more explicit, I'm happy for Fiddlerman to dictate.
When you're in an orchestra, you have to play what you are told, and the experience is usually better than you were expecting. It is what you make it.
(I'm trying to psyche myself up for Fanny Mendelssohn, lol!)

It would be nice to join again this year. Thanks @SharonC for pointing this out for me!
I’m happy with anything you choose. Like Gordon said, in the orchestra you just play what you are told to play.
The only piece I know on the list is Walking in the air, but I can easily learn whatever is chosen.
Christmas carols are interesting, because here in Finland we mostly have ”our own” traditional songs composed by Finns or some Scandinavian composers. You don’t know them and I don’t know the songs that are familiar to all of you. So I can’t give new ideas, just saying I’m in. 👍
