So my hubby and kids gave me an early mothers day pressie - I'm booked into a 3 day summer fiddle camp - very excited and a bit nervous - they require you to have a capo, (had no idea what it was) I saw some on amazon for guitar, they run under $10 but they look big. Is this right. does anyone know, will it scratch my violin or make it weirdly heavy? Or maybe there is a special violin one and Im looking in the wrong place...didn't see any on fiddlershop...so I'm presuming it's not a "normal" thing.

Happy mother's day and congratulations on getting to go to the fiddle camp. I had never heard of a capo for violin/fiddle until you brought this up.
It appear many fiddlers use capo's for the same purpose that guitar players do according to my Google searches, especially Cajun fiddlers. Here's someones methods of creating a fiddle capo without purchasing one

Yep - here - Im so excited! I just read through it all (my kids booked it) and don't see that its a requirement, it says knowledge of one - it is on the sheet that they sent me confirming....but along with extra strings, so maybe its for the guitar peeps you think?

I've never really played in a group environment, I did go to an old time music festival last year, brought my fiddle and was encouraged to try playing by a group of players. I found the groups to be very helpful, I'd like to do it again when there isn't so much of an audience like the little festival gets. I could see it being a great learning opportunity to just jam with a group. I think you'll have fun

Oh super cool and fun! I play at a weekly jam with other fiddlers, guitars, mados, banjos, upright bass, penny whistles, etc. When a whole bunch of us fiddlers show up we have a lot of fun taking over the group several times to play fiddle tunes. I have learned so much about playing with others, learning by ear, and improvising. Have a great time!
Opportunity is often missed because it wears suspenders and looks like hard work.

and
That all sounds like a blast, I have to get over the nervousness of playing with people, as I'm always on my own, so no one has to hear me, it took a ton of courage to put a vid up, not really sure what level I'm at, I just keep chugging along!
But I am so looking forward to it, and it might be easier with strangers, no expectations and stuff.
