I just watched a show I recorded 12/20/2021. It was in PBS, The Nutcracker and The Mouse King. Yes, I know, I recorded in 12/20/2021 and just now watched it.

It is the real story of the Nutcracker. It is not performed by a ballet. It is played by the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, directed by John Mauceri, and narrated by Alan Cummings.

This is fantastic. John Mauceri introduces the performance, and providing a history of Tchaikovsky's connection, and provides information between some parts.

This is very well done and will bring you more of the Nutcracker than you have heard before. That is all I am saying,

If you see this listed on you local PBS or elsewhere, I highly recommend you watch this. It is very entertaining, The orchestra is fabulous and Alan Cummings narrates it superbly,

@Mouse -

Thank you!

The only way I could find to view it is by PBS Passport.  Needless to say, I had to donate... 'tis the season!

I just went looking for this, too.  Not on the schedule of the local PBS station, but like Emily says, available on Passport.  I think I'll donate & catch this & a few more of the shows that I've seen on the Passport list.

Thanks, @Mouse for the tip!

Like I said; I recorded it last Dec 20, 2021. If I see it listed later in December, I will pass on the information. They repeat a lot of their holiday shows yearly. I liked it much better than watching the ballet.

@ELCBK and @SharonC and anyone else interested, PBS is airing this wonderful Nutcracker, "The Nutcracker and the Mouse King" Friday, Dec 23, from 10-11:30pm, and repeated from 1am - 2:30am.

This is the description:

Alan Cummings narrates a re-imagination of Tchaikovsky's holiday story, featuring thenRoyal Scottish National Orchestra under the direction of John Mauceri"

This is very entertaining.

@Mouse  Not all PBS stations show things at the same time.  I think most prime-time shows are national, but local affiliates may schedule different things at other times.

My local PBS is going to show it once on the 24th  at 1:03 A.M. (not 1:00, but 1:03—go figure).  It’s good—I have the means to record on broadcast stations, so I’m going to do that.  Thanks for the heads up!

Yep, they may or may not show it, and it could be at different times, but it is a start.

I think there is a member who does not log in, but I suspect checks in as a guest, that may be from my area, my school actually so, maybe he will see it. If it is who I think is, he may have graduated with my class or the year before. I don't know for sure though and am not going to bug him with an email. Anyway, the info would be local for him. There were a couple other members from 2 or 3 years ago who referenced being from my local PBS area, either in the intro or response to my welcome email, who do not log in, but I have noticed show up in Group Projects, so the exact info would fit them, too.

It is really well done. I am going to watch it again. Alan Cummings was so great narrating and the orchestra support was excellent.
