Have you ever ttied to recall a melody and some parasitic other tune kept crawling back up into your memory? Disturbing your practice or even worse performance? any buskers or pros here that the intent was to play one thing and something else perculated up and out on to your instrument?
Was trying to recall the one one tune and the other was floating around. just thought it was funny and embellished it a little for a topic. bonus points if you can name both tunes.. without using name that tune software..lol. assuming i play well enough for tune recognition which is a whole nuther topic.. 🤣

Sounds great, as usual, @ABitRusty.
I definitely hear Arkansas Traveler in there.
And the other tune, as I strain my memory, I believe, is The Crawling Parasite, isn’t it? 🤣
Yes, I’ve had that experience. I have pro friends who will even have that occur onstage once in a while at more casual venues.
Thanks for sharing! Lovely image, too.

Arkansas traveller, and nice playing as well, no doubt about that. dont know about another tune, but I am not familiar with Your yankie tunes anyway lol.
You just came up with a great party idea though, you have to have one half of one tune, the a part and the b part of another, played as a new hybrid tune how about that for a laugh, I think it would be good, by the way is that your carbon fiddle you are playing

EDIT

...mentioned (somewhere else) I'd like to start learning similar tunes, so I can think of them/use them as variations for each other, but I'm not exactly sure where you are going with this - swapping parts is easier than intermingling 2 two tunes (depending on how different they are).Jeez, I spend SO MUCH energy trying to keep tunes to themselves and in sets. I've passed over learning tunes (in the past) that remind me too much of another one because I didn't want to risk mixing them up.
Really wish (now) I'd started making a list of similar tunes (as I ran across them) - right from the start!
🤔... I do like changing the mood of a tune by changing the key/mode of a 'B' Part (if I want to stir things up beyond a few variations)... but it obviously takes me time to think it thru (can't just do it on the fly yet).
Youre exactly right and part of what I guess Im looking at.. Things to avoid putting in same session or jam set or if a performer in same setlist for a show because its too risky.
The two i mentioned NEVER would be played together simply because theyre from different genres. just using as a grand example haha. there was another two that the B part was so close it messed me up...maybe cooleys and maids of mitchelstown..or otters holt.
We probably have discussed everything before haha 😀

There are rampant similarities among fiddle tunes. I sometimes try to start one tune and something else comes out -- aggravating to be sure. After thinking about it for a few moments the desired tune may pop into my consciousness, but other times it doesn’t make an appearance until I start thinking about something else.
One presenter at a BG workshop suggested writing down the first few notes using ABC notation. Presumably that’s easier than using standard notation or tab. And of course that requires having physical notes -- a whole ’nother complication, just when I’m trying to keep things simple!
One strategy is to avoid playing similar tunes one after another.
And just to add to the drama, if I’m not paying attention I’ll get the A part for a tune rocking along and then the B part from a different tune shows up! My jam buddies look at me like I came from the moon, haha.
Well, when I took up fiddle a few years ago, I knew that it would enrich my life with some new challenges. And indeed it is a vastly enriching experience!

Right now im barely scratching the surface with the number i could even pair. maybe the top 10 or so from each type..jig/reel
..a few hornpipes... handful of slip jigs and polkas so really its not so big of a deal technically. but even in my short time with this ive ran across some that are just like you say.. the b parts maybe so close tbeir the same...or a parts.. whatever. so trying to make note of them
if any specific come to mind in the future and can remember plop 'em in this topic! like to hear what everyone finds.

elcbk said..."Since I know you can see melodic contour on individual tracts in DAW, is it possible to overlay different tunes to see where they line up? ...ideally, I'd want each tune shape printed on clear acetate - so I could just slide the whole tune around to find where shapes line up"
that would be a waste of time to me. Im talking about what happens with a person and an instrument and recall of melodies..and what happens as far as.. when i tried to play this or that melody this melody kept coming up.. or when i try and pair these tunes together i keep messing up because i cant seperate them. i know the session list out the also known as list.. and I could check that and make sure i wasnt calling the same tune at a session.. but idk.. usually tune names get set in players minds and thats not a problem.
So, if we get accustomed to these melodic 'patterns' - can't it actually be a blessing?...maybe pick up tunes quicker when we hear something similar being played?
I cant answer that for you or anyone. is it for you? I think what your bringing up is being familiar with the style and that happens with time and effort spent listening and playing them. im not sure if its a learn a lick and insert them together kind of thing if thats what youre getting at.

way more than what i was hoping for. this was just going to be a real world this happened to me the other day kind of topic hoping to start a conversation about funny session or practice happenings centered around the original thought. Not necessarily heres a list that look or soumd so similar you should avoid...more of a.. i actually tried these together and got them mixed up.. aint that silly.. 🙂. appreciate the theory and alternative topics though.

A fiddle teacher suggested to me that there is a very limited number of basic patterns in fiddle tunes. At the time I was not able to follow up on this to identify those patterns. It might be useful to explore this to identify the various elements and similarities.
Emily’s rising/falling chart is one good way to think about this. There are undoubtedly other approaches that might be instructive. TBH, I don’t know if I would benefit from exploring such structural issues or whether it would only further confuse my thinking.
My time is limited and so is my brainpower, so I gotta be careful about how I budget those resources. My current simplistic approach when similar tunes or phrases get mixed up is to take a break and let my unconscious brain sort things out. Often, that happens without further efforts one my part. If I’m playing with others I can simply stop playing and listen to what everyone else is doing.

the chart may be useful for someone. it may be worth while putting in another topic and exploring it further there.
to me i learn ..have always learned songs or tunes by just learning them. new songs on the radio, something i hear on youtube.. fiddle class we learn both by ear and by paper.
but this really isnt a how to learn a tune topic..its what happens when youve REALLY already learned a tune well enough you can mix and match them IN A SET. and run into hiccups.
