@Katie L -
Woo Hoo! You're BACK & in the Christmas Spirit!
Take your time to relax EVERYTHING - I KNOW YOU GOT THIS! 🤗
I'm glad you brought up your setup issue & pain. Going to take another look at mine, too (always room for improvement). I still have terrible posture & noticeably tense up my toes/feet. 🥴
It feels (to me) like you are reaching your chin out to grab your violin - something I used to do... so something definitely isn't right.
I'm sure you remember talk of the 'Alexander Technique', but worth looking at this study that helps violinists with long necks.
Violinist In Balance - Starting with Face/Jaw: Easing the Pressure
Alexander Technique* teachers have worked with the musicians at the Utrecht School for the Arts, Faculty of Music in the Netherlands since 1991. Teachers of the Utrecht Alexander Technique Institute for Musicians give weekly private lessons to conservatory students, helping them to become aware of tension patterns that prevent them from progressing in their playing.
We noticed that there was a special challenge to violinists and violists because holding their instrument involves neck and head, where basic balance mechanisms reside. The equipment they were using often got in the way of free movement and disturbed the equilibrium needed to play their instrument. Retraining of cramped muscles and joints was impossible in the presence of ill-fitting equipment.

Thanks so much for the feedback 😀and of course for watching .
I feel like I don’t really reach for the violin but then I obviously look like I do . I feel like it’s more of a nod ha ha maybe sometimes it turns into a reach . I do actually have some news …. There is an Alexander technique expert where I live in Northampton ! I’ve e mailed him so hopefully I can get him to look at me . There is a pic of a violinist on his website. So thank you for mentioning it Emily . 😀 I have a weird thing going on with my thumb at the moment too . So many issues !!
when I got in the car this morn.. jingle bell jingle bell jingle bell rock …. That’s what I’m supposed to be doing this year after you did it abitrusty and I loved it !!! Ooops oh well.
That’s a metronome Sharon , the only thing I like about it is the colour !
Thanks for watching I’ll keep practicing by the way the neck ache was a bit better this eve .. it’s not that bad it’s just annoying . 🙄

So I went for my appointment . Had a massive stress trying to get there because of traffic . No idea what we would do without the ring road on Northampton ! Then I couldn’t park , then I couldn’t get in the building . So anyway made it inside. Had a chat with my guy who did some relaxation techniques which was very nice and then he gave me some general violin standing advice . So it went ok and I have another appointment but it was more general rather than violin. But i must say I haven’t really had any aches since and this eve I changed my hold slightly so my violin was more on my shoulder and I managed a fair bit of practice with no aches . 😀
