Here is a special forum created solely for those who want criticism to help improve their playing. Please give criticism with respect and understanding as to how difficult it can be to expose yourself as a player. If I deem a critique unjustly harsh I may choose to remove it to protect the poster. This is a great opportunity for learning violinists to get free help from other knowledgeable players. One of the greatest ways to improve.

Hey Toni, I have been working on Scarborough Fair too. Trying to throw in some slides and double stops after practicing Amazing Grace. Tried it in Rome at the weekend when I borrowed a street beggars violin at a corner café.
When I get a computer (it moved out, along with the girlfriend!!) I'll post a vid of my efforts.
Would be great t if FM did a jazzed up version!

I am amazed at how old people of my age are.....

Okay... here goes nothing!!!!

After two hellish days of work... in my work out clothes... but here ya go... Let me have it.  ( I have no idea why the Ipad in this location makes crazy lights and flashing)

I might come to my senses and remove this link soon... so get it while you can.

Terry I can't wait to see your version.   I make a very stupid violin face... I improved after about 20 takes... I realize I looked like I was in  pain.  So this is supposed to be my zen face.

Bravo Toni,

I think you didn't just jump one step but you leaped forward.
ESPECIALLY concerning your facial expressions. Looked like you were enjoying yourself.

Obviously there are some intonation issues but not bad ones. Can you hear which notes are off? That is the first step in improving intonation. Listen over and over and try to identify them.

Fluency would be another. I loved your expression when you forgot what was next or just hesitated. smile

Those eighth note triplets are trying to haunt you aren't they :-)
All three notes should equal one beat.

Last question: Are you tired of this piece? I know you've been playing it for a long time. When I work, or worked on pieces for a very long time I felt really good to leave them, begin a new exciting challenge and come back to the first piece long after with a completely new perspective. Always a great feeling.

Keep up the great work. It's really paying off.

Thank you Pierre.   You rock.  Leaped forward... that  gives me a bit of hope and yes..I am in a funk because I am a bit tired of this piece.. however..If I could vibrate It would really be perfect.

I need a new song...working on another..but only 50% done..but it is leaps and bounds over this one and I have a good support system.

So were my  8th notes to slow??.. and will a faster bow fix that?

I can hear which notes are off... really bad...and I had bad fiddle face for the first twenty takes... I had to do a zen mini smile so I didn't look like I was being killed or food poisoned.  So I tried to be kind of like "stepford wife"  ha ha...

I am going to keep on chugging because I love the violin...best passion in life so to date.

Thanks for the help.

Toni

That's really quite nice!  Your intonation is good, too.  Congratulations for learning that song so well!  Are you learning this by ear or from notation?

One area you might think about is the timing.  If you are working from notation, then each note you see tells you its length (quarter note = 1 beat, half note = 2 beats, two eighth notes in one beat and so on).  You should be careful to hold each note for its full value and no more.  Each note extends until the next one starts (or there is a rest).  This will allow others to either play along with you or sing the lyrics as you play the melody.  That's fun!

If you are learning this by ear, then double congratulations!  You're doing great!  It will be harder to get the timing down but you can obviously listen well, so if you continue to listen carefully, you will get it right.

Again, you're playing well.  Keep up the good work!

Thank  you so much.  When I learned the song for my recital.  I had to learn from notation and I focused on the music and the note lengths... Teacher made sure of it. You know she was like parsley SAGE.... but it has been months from playing by memory....It is a good idea for me to go back to the music and look at the quarter and half notes and see if I can get the 8ths right too.

Thanks for your feedback.  I totally appreciate it.

I think it sound's fine, Toni w/ exception's, LOL,,, put down your violin and sing it the way you would sing in the shower or in your car.  Try to concentrate on the timing, the length of each individual note.

Your intonation will come in time, it's not bad now, but can improve.

Also, you need to find / intentionally make more time for practice.. give up making dinner and use that time for practicing.   rofl  Good job.

I want someones wife (leaving it out for specific reasons) to hear this and I want another person to record her expression.... Or even better, for Dennis to play this live for this unnamed wife and for the whole thing to be recorded. :-)

Good job cdenyb smile

Bump!!! Had to bump this up again! Den I think back to the first time you played in the orchard... You have come so far in such a short time. Your bow strokes seem effortless and smooth!

WOW, Dennis, I didn't realize that is you, you are in the shadow's. What improvement since the orchard's.

Super job, I love the vibrato and the smoothness of the bow.
