Oh, BTW, it's funny you mention my posture. When I posted this on Youtube, I noticed that looking at the thumbnails of all the videos I've posted since I started, I could see the progressive improvement of my set-up, especially my posture. So, again, I think shooting video, audio and still images of yourself periodically can give you some important feedback.

Great Scarborough Fair.  You are able to show off a little already for family and friends.  Very nice basic performance, basic competence IMO. I think I remember you doing Annie Laurie nicely too.  I play both those pieces too.  Did you get Annie Laurie from that edmund jacobs guy on youtube?  It sounded like it.  That is where I learned it.  He is a good player.

Can you say some more about your wrist brace?  Is it supposed to improve your violin playing, or are you wearing it to fix an injury?

If you can't bend your wrist I don't see how you can avoid bowing from the shoulder and getting into problems.

I sprained my bowing wrist a couple months ago, and I didn't try to play for about a week.  It's mostly okay now.

Thanks for the positive comments, RosinedUp! Annie Laurie was not me, though. I don't remember who that was.

The brace is for tendonitis. About a month ago, I started having sharp pain in my right (bowing) wrist. It only hurts when I grasp something between my thumb and first finger then move my hand inward. Hmmm, now what activity would possibly involve that kind of motion?

dunnowink

My doctor recommended wearing a brace and taking an anti-inflammatory for a while. I have two braces: one that has rigid inserts and covers from my hand to mid-way up my forearm, and the one you saw in the video, which is shorter and flexible. I can't play with the rigid brace, so I got the latter one specifically for playing the violin.

I did not practice for the first two weeks or so after the pain started, but after that I started practicing with the flexible brace. I think the tendonitis is getting incrementally better and I hope to be able to stop using the brace soon.

One benefit of using the brace has been that it seems to reduce bow bouncing, which has been a problem for me. The downside is it reduces wrist flexibility, but I'm trying to not use my shoulder too much and maintain a normal bowing motion.

Glad to hear that your sprained wrist is getting better!

Was it you intention to play in the edge of your bow hair while playing? I thought I saw that happening in the silent night video.
