The rule of thumb is about a pencil's width between the stick and hair at the middle of the bow.

When the work's all done and the sun's settin' low,

I pull out my fiddle and I rosin up the bow.

I learnt from another source that the bow should be tighten to the point that bow stick almost never touches the hair when playing on the strings. This is to maintain maximum flexibility. This gauge works for me.

That means aggressive players need to tighten the bow more as they dig harder into the strings.

Start with a pencil width from the closest point of contact and test yourself in both directions until you feel that you have found what works for you.
