I love this idea of a Hole in the Heart Violin to Viola Conversion, I honestly wish they'd apply that hole-in-the-heart idea to Cello & Double Bass so that those smaller Fractional Sized Cellos & Double Basses would sound punchier than they normally would especially on those low notes. Oh & I should clarify, the Corelli Crystal Viola Strings have been renamed as "New Crystal Viola Strings"

For those with an interest, check out the December 2000 Strad Magazine article entitled:  “Too Small to be Beautiful?” starting on page 1350.  The “dark horse” 60£ Chinese fractional violins with the 35£ hole in the heart modification kicked butt against Sabatier amoeba-shaped violas and Tertis viola clones (among others) in a blind sound test with 60 music teachers and makers.  All entrants used donated Corelli Crystal strings.

The Corelli Crystal Viola Strings have been rebranded as "New Crystal Viola Strings"

Another development.  I left an email with Stringers of Edinburgh for their opinion of doing a hole in the heart to a 14 inch body viola for use as a doubler instrument.  They seem to be the only shop (that I have found) that does this modification as a standard item of sale.

I was going to use Corelli Crystal strings to keep in the spirit of the Strad article, but viola examples seem hard to locate.

I got an update, the Corelli Crystal Viola Strings have been rebranded as

NEW CRYSTAL Strings
