A couple of thoughts. The scabbed on piece which hides the back button could be removed. What bothers me more is that it appears that the wood overhanging the ribs on both the front and back plates in the area toward the neck was removed similar to that of a guitar. If that is the case and not a camera artifact, it would be very difficult to scarf joint new material (but not impossible). Convert it into a 7/8 scale?

Until I looked at the photo showing the amount of fingerboard extension, I thought that it might have been a baroque violin. It looks like it just needed a neck reset. Certainly crude work.

Hi steveduf and others. I happened upon a blog yesterday that talked about this (Slight Violins by Dave Slight). The peocess is called marquetry. I captured his example.
