The basic idea here is much discussed and that is re-stringing an instrument to some other voice.  No big deal BUT !

I have a 15" viola with original viola G,D and A strings and a standard violin E on top.

Maybe I should have put regular violin strings on G,D and A also ??  My violin strings are fitting OK back at the pegs but not as many turns.

But any violin strings on a viola are no longer violin strings due to length changes ?

All I know is that the viola G,D and A with violin E on top sounds great but can I do better?

Confused in NC

I don't think you can do better. Exactly as you said, the 4/4 violin strings are designed to be tuned at those pitches at a specific length. Maybe you can do better with the viola E string that Barry is referring to but I don't think you can benefit from violin strings on that instrument.

I'm going to have to get that viola E now that I've heard of it.  Maybe the Helicore site will tell me more.

I will post a video of this instrument once my new (today) Helicores settle down for G,D and A.
