• Please begin by telling us anything you would like to about yourself. Age, place of birth, residence, etc.
Well for starters I'm 60 years old now and live in a small town in central North Carolina. I have lived here for almost 35 years now but still call Bristol TN home. I was a military brat for about 6 years until my Mom put her foot down and my father got out of the USAF, the I enlisted in the Air Force during the Vietnam war and got out after 4 years 3 months, then I went to college at ETSU in Johnson City TN. After that I got a job with Western Electric.

• What made you decide to play the violin?
I started playing because I figured if my father could start playing at age 80 I could try playing too.

• How long have you been playing the violin?
I have been playing since just after Christmas of 2011.

• How often do you play? How long are your practice sessions?
I try to play about half an hour a day each day. Some times I make it some times I don't.

• In your opinion, what's your proficiency on…

@ Springer..... Nice interview, right to the point.  smile

Re: humped fingerboard. Not sure if you mean high or low in the middle. Laying a 12" straight edge the length of the fingerboard, on the G side of the fingerboard, there should be .75 - to no more than 1 mm space between the straight edge and fingerboard. On the E side approx.  .5 mm between straight edge and fingerboaard. This is called "Scoop", it allow's clearance for string vibration.

From the nut, there should be approx. 1/2" before the scoop starts.

Yeah Ken you heard right. I was humped in the middle about 1.25 or more where it should have been scooped. This was a bad news fingerboard that I am still working on.facepalm

I hear ya.... on my old violin, I took it to a Luthier and had him reshape the fingerboard. They've got gauge's they use to do that. I think he charged $ 65.00, but it was worth it to me.

good luck with your's..  crossedfingers

Thanks for the insight Tony. For some reason I didn't have you down as a 600 year old, I thought you were much younger.
And Congrats on owning a small string section of your own, wow!

I am amazed at how old people of my age are.....

Nice interview, Tony. I enjoyed learning a little about you and your musical and non-musical background. Nice photo, too...it almost looks like a Rembrandt painting.

No, I was serious...I know you didn't intend it to be so dark, but it is a nice, artistic effect!

And you don't look a day over 550! Guess you really are a Renaissance man!
