Hi All

I'm Emily, from England.  I began playing the Electric guitar when I was younger.  My daughter got a 1/2 size loan Violin from school a little while ago and I thought it seemed really fun and interesting so I bought my own (don't worry I got a full size!!) and have been playing for six months now.  I'm so glad she was introduced to the Violin as it's something I wouldn't have considered learning and I'm so happy to be learning now!

I'm learning myself from the internet and books and having lots of fun along the way.

Welcome to the forum, Emily!

It might be a while before America wakes up and responds.

Most of what you need to know about me is in my profile (I think I'll have to re-read it).

Hi, @Fashionandfiddle. Welcome to the forum. How neat that you and your daughter can do violin together.

I send out Welcome Emails to new members but am a little laid up at the moment and will get one out to you ASAP. It will contain some useful links to specific areas of the forum to help you get started. We are all very thrilled to have you join our community.

Welcome to the Fiddlerman Forum, Emily!

I think it's absolutely fabulous that you and your Daughter have both started to learn the Violin!

Schools in our area didn't have an Orchestra, just Marching Band - my Daughter and I may have followed the same path, if they did.  Instead, she played the flute and I had no clue that I would miss out on many years of enjoyment.

I do think I have the increasing interest of some of my Grandchildren, so I'm very excited!  Just hope I can become good enough to be of benefit to them.

Many members here also started with guitar - so I'm sure you'll relate to all the advice they might have.  I played a little piano when I was a child & think any previous music experience helps, now.

So, what type of music do you want to play?

Looking forward to hearing of your progress & having your participation here.

Glad you joined us!

@ELCBK

I want to play American fiddle tunes, bluegrass etc but I also like playing some classic pieces and pop and rock. My daughter and I have the Suzuki book with the duet pieces so she is learning that and I am learning the duet parts. I am currently working on Time to say goodbye from the Fiddlerman sheet music. I also love playing christmas music....those around me not so keen on me working on them at this time of year!!

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome!

@Fashionandfiddle -

That's wonderful!

I 💖 Christmas and Halloween - with all the associated music.  Once September starts, that's usually my Green Light to start getting obsessed with it.

Hope arkmaverick is still frequenting this forum - he is very much into Christmas and performing at that time of year.  You can see more in his intro thread here:

In that case stay tuned for the Christmas project parts. They should be ready within the week. We're doing, "White Christmas".

Welcome Emily!

A few years ago my son started playing the violin. I learned when I was a similar age. We have had a lot of fun playing duets together.

@Fashionandfiddle -

The whole point of the Parties is because it IS hard to record ourselves and not be nervous - the more you do, the better you get!

Recording is also much better than trying to see yourself play in a mirror, because you don't have to take your focus off playing to see what you are doing.

Don't forget, we all had to start the same way and we all wish we did better - you will only get encouragement here! 😊

True. Nerves must be worked on. However, you can also learn to play while nervous. BUT, that is not easy to do unless you find situations that make you nervous.
So YES, record yourselves and reveal it here. 😝

Yes.

As a teen I played the piano a lot in front of audiences and once in front of a microphone.

The mic made me more nervous than any audience. I always found it odd that possessing musical talent should mean that you had to want to play solo to an audience and I never enjoyed it, but I was forced to do it (not forced - I took it for granted. Our region had a very good music festival, and my second piano teacher was its organiser), and acclimatisation helps, as Pierre says, although I never totally got over nerves.

Mind you, I'm permanently on beta-blockers nowadays.

I've said all this before. I hope it wasn't in this thread, lol!

I used beta-blockers on a few occasions when I was auditioning. I didn't want to become dependent so I limited the use and also, wanted to have the ability to play in front of anyone at any time. The first time I used "Inderal" my teacher asked me right before a solo performance with an orchestra if I wanted one. I said, "WHAT"!!!, why have I never heard of this before????
The few times that I used the beta blockers, I played colder than I normally would have, but at least I wasn't nervous and shaking lol. There are advantages to both I guess.
