Hello from Wild and Wonderful WV, located in the northern panhandle just a 30 minute drive from downtown Pittsburgh, PA.

Learning the violin is my first "bucket list" goal, having just reached the age of 65.  Always admired the string sound and thought I need to do something new and challenging.

My husband of 42 years was surprised and puzzled when I announced my intentions last weekend.  (Warned him my 2nd choice was the harp..  Dah.  Anyone old enough to remember Harpo in those old b/w movies?)

I am a bit concerned with the part of learning to read music - as I found it really overwhelming in grade school music class.  Just finished printing Fiddlerman's Beginners Etudes-Studies while waiting for Santa to deliver my violin and supplies.  So I guess I'm serious about this project.

My other hobbies are cooking, gardening indoors & out, genealogy, and World of Warcraft and Guild Wars 2.

Truly am soooo very grateful for this site.

Welcome from Alaska.

Opportunity is often missed because it wears suspenders and looks like hard work.

Greetings from Arkansas.  That's an interesting mix of hobbies you've got.

I remember Harpo from an episode of I Love Lucy.

Never mind maneuvers, just go straight at them.

Greetings from Massachusetts and welcome, Krootie! And congratulations on checking off a bucket list item!

You'll find that there are lots of us adults here learning to play the violin/fiddle and everyone -- including and especially Pierre (Fiddlerman) -- is very helpful and friendly.

I caught the bug to play the fiddle while in West Virginia...only in the eastern panhandle town of Shepherdstown. I've been there a bunch of times for work and on vacation and have enjoyed attending the Thursday night jam at O'Hurley's General Store as a spectator. Maybe some day I'll be good enough to go there and play.

Don't be too concerned about learning to read music. You'll get the hang of it. While I personally recommend learning to read music if you're going to be a musician, there are plenty of folks who advocate the ear learning method. I've been working on my ear learning skills and am starting to prefer it.

Good luck, keep us posted on your progress and join in the fun here on the forum! -- Diane

When the work's all done and the sun's settin' low,

I pull out my fiddle and I rosin up the bow.

Thanks for the warm welcome and I will remember the forum is here for help.  Guaranteed as a beginner.  And I really appreciated the Harpo video provided by Lyle.
