Hallo everyone! I'm Alexandra (Alex), and I'm just starting in with the Violin!

Twenty-two years old, and I've always wanted to learn it, ever since I was a little girl. In school, when they brought in musicians to show us the different kinds of instruments we could chose to learn, I was going to play violin until I saw the Trumpet. They played Star Wars, and I was (and still am) a sucker for those films. Was instantly sold on it!

Started playing the trumpet and a few months in, I still couldn't seem to get it right. Turns out I had asthma and was having trouble with airflow into the instrument. Could have been worked around, had I kept with it but I got frustrated and ended up dropping it. By then, it was sort of too late to join in with Orchestra. Ever since then, the only instrument I've ever really played is piano, and I say that very, very loosely. As in, plunking keys and playing the most simple version of songs by ear.

Finally, though, I've decided that I really want to give it a shot. If anything, I'll get really good with Twinkle Twinkle Little Star. tongue Haven't even received mine yet, actually, but I cannot wait to get started. Because my budget didn't allow for anything much, I got the CVN-Black, which I'm really looking forward to playing! Hoping it arrives tomorrow.

Anyways, I'll probably post a video soon of my horrible screechy-scratchy week one!

Nice to meet you all, and see you around the forum!

@Alex-Prime  - HI!!  Welcome to the coolest, friendliest violin forum on the internet!!  Playing the Star Wars theme was the only way my youngest would practice the piano.

Have you seen this? -

I am addicted to collecting sheet music so of course I also found this.  Is it similar to the trumpet sheet music?:

I understand the asthma issue.  I have developed it as an adult.  Now I can't even begin to play the flute and the recorder which requires much less air gets me coughing at times.

I hate being negative about other teachers on the net but if you guys want to watch this guy, be cautious about holding the violin with your chin as he does as it could cause painful future neck problems. I've worked with lot's of students as well as pros who have developed serious pain issues from this kind of hold. Try to find a comfortable hold that utilizes less holding and more jaw contact/balance on the collar bone for more relaxation. Secondly, his right arm when playing lower half/frog is also prone for trouble. At the frog lift the elbow slightly more to avoid the wrist bend that he gets.
By all means watch him for tips on Star Wars if you like :-)

@Fiddlerman - Yes!!  Sorry and @Alex-Prime - I was posting that just as a reference to Star Wars.

Thanks guys! Just got my violin quite literally about ten minutes ago! Pretty thrilled, although the first thing I did was accidentally knock the bridge out of place. facepalm Seems to have been revived and I scooted it into the right place, I'm hoping!

Now to tune the thing!

Thanks for the the video, Schaick! I wish I would have known that when I was seven. Would have saved me those unbearable (for everyone and their ears) months of horrid trumpeting. amuse I plan to learn how to play mostly from this site, actually, thanks to the fantastic Fiddlerman videos. Might order a book as well, not sure yet. Looking forward to it all, though. :D

Yes, to tune the thing > most important > it may take some time BUT one must be in tune. Then one as I often do question > am I really in tune???

To tune the thing > one must be in tune.
