Well just a brief bio I played the violin over 20 years ago and stopped and until now when my son wants to learn how to play did I look into purchasing one for him.  I cam across one at a very decent price but I am so lost on makers/brands.  Any one have an idea of where I can get more info on the violin I have?

How about posting some info about the one you're looking at. Perhaps a picture would be helpful and maybe a web site link if it's available there. Then we might be able to give some info on comparisons.

Welcome to the family... it's a fun place here. lots to learn and lots of help available from around the world.thumbs-up

Welcome ravenmarmata,

The rumor that I really do exist might unfortunately be true. LOL
Thanks for backing me up on that one Fiddlestix ;-)
Like Dennis said, give us some info on the violin that you are interested in and we might know something about it. I test new inexpensive violins every week. I've played on so many that it is depressing at times. So many violins are hard to play on but even the ones that I test might be great when I get them and not so good when someone else gets one. Violins are for the most part, hand made and differ very much from one to another.
The "Concert Master" that I sell gets tested and I exchange each and every one that I don't feel is good enough, "sound-wise". Sometimes the sound is so good that I accept cosmetic flaws.
Good luck in your pursuit for a good violin for your son.
