Hello everyone,
I'm Savannah, and my boyfriend Chris (chorlick) and I are in our third week of playing! We were talking one day and realized we'd both always wanted to learn how to play the violin. Instead of waiting for retirement we decided to just do it now, and here we are
This is a very interesting process for me in particular because I'm not a big music fan. I never took (or wanted to take) Band or Orchestra in high school, I don't like classical music, or even much music at all. I've never wanted to be a musician, and I can't stand guitars But --and this sounds silly-- my family watched a lot of Fiddler on the Roof when I was younger, and I love that movie, and the music in there really stuck with me. I've always thought the violin was the most soulful instrument, and as a writer 'soulful' stuff is really attractive to me.
So for the first time in my life I'm learning to read music and what all the different symbols mean. Poor Chris; he's had music lessons before so this stuff is sorta intuitive for him, but I was unfamiliar even with what are apparently basic terms.
Anyway. I knew he was getting more active on the forum, and Fiddlerman has been SO helpful and kind to us that I figured it was time I came to hang out, too.
So far Chris and I haven't told any friends or family that we're doing this... we want to surprise them at our Christmas party this year by playing the duet of beginner's Pachelbel. I also want to learn Danny Boy (yes, like in Fiddlerman's St. Patrick's Day Greeting video!) as a surprise for my father, who's very proud of his Irish heritage. Is this possible? We hope so!
I'm loving the secret firmness developing on my fingertips, and practicing at night with Chris. Our adult lessons start at the end of the month, and when the second violin comes in you might see a video of us playing together!
Thanks again to Fiddlerman, and everyone who's given us helpful comments and suggestions!
