"Old Time" has to step aside for these Critters for Fiddlers!
The Badgers are loose in Scotland!
"The Lochaber Badger" is a reel, played by Sarah Loughran.
The Drystones play "The Badger Set" (TheMaskedAvenger61).
The Session has sheet music for a Badger Slip Jig, by Graham Rorie - an Orcadian (Scotland). It has a time change!
Elephant Sessions, BBC Scots Trad Awards Album of The Year 2017 winners, perform "Misty Badger" (TradTV).
I had to throw this one in, "The Badger".
AND A FERRET!
Keko Perera has this tutorial for a great Irish Reel, "Andy Renwick's Ferret". Similarities to the "Congress Reel", Ferret's going on my OWL, too.
Andy Renwick's Ferret Tutorial
Btw, I didn't know "Banish Misfortune" was also known as "The Mangled Badger"!

@Gordon Shumway -🤔 Is one of those tunes you're going to practice about a Badger?
Err, no, but you did miss this one: -

Verified human - the ignominy!

Sorry, I didn't notice the IMSLP page was blank - I've never seen that before.
or did I just post a corrupted link?

Back to Celtic/Cape Breton tunes, here's more Critters!
Frogs!
"Lord Frog and Lady Mouse" (Bmin) is a Scottish Air from the Opera, "Silvia; or, The Country Burial" by John Gay. There's sheet music for it at thesession.org, even though it's listed as a jig. (lol)
Absolutely infatuated with this version (goon143)!
Here's a 2nd Version, that seems more popular (Kath's Tune a Day).
Also Crazy about Will Harmon's reel, "Bang Your Frog On The Sofa" (Dmin) - played by Girsa (Trevor Sommers)! Sheet Music & funny origin of the tune at thesession.org.
...okay, maybe not a live frog.
There's a really cool jig at thesession.org, called "The Croaking Frog"! No idea who composed it, but it's actually a C MIXOLYDIAN tune! Can't find a video of anyone playing it, but it sounds like it jumps back and forth between major & minor - a very interesting jig!

Frog in the Well was 20th Maines marching tune. They say its based on froggie went a courtin ( I dont hear it ) which has the frog courtin the mouse which ties back to your firat frog tune...plus Gettysburg anniversary coming up. Thought it was a nice fittin puzzle piece.

The frog on the fiddle tune is Jimmy O Bu ..a barndance/polka....guess you could have frogs and badgers there ( in a barn )...or have a barn dance and then play the badger Polka...

@ABitRusty -
Thanx, Greg - I didn't recognize it. 😳
Had listened to "Frog in The Well" the other day on thesession.org - my brain must be fried, but I swear none of the transcriptions there sound like your video or Lucas Gonze's version. I didn't post it here just because I thought "Paddy Cronin’s" was a more well known alias for it.
The Lucas Gonze site you linked, has the correct sheet music for your video tune, "Frog In The Well" - but there mentions original source as "The Marriage of The Frogge and The Mouse", another tune that bears no resemblance!
Then, I got completely confused, because of all the talk at The Session about "Froggie Went A Courtin'" being related to "Lord Frog and Lady Mouse" - when they're clearly completely different tunes!
...unless they are only speaking of lyrics?

Oh, btw, really like "Jimmy o' the Bu's Polka", guess the one frog did, too! 😊

These tunes are just plain FUN.
I don't know what it is about some of these Reels that is so darn attractive!
Actually, I'm starting to see that playing the "finger-twisters" can be quite the rush!
"Bang Your Frog On The Sofa"?
Can't believe I'm so addicted to another crazy Reel!
OMG, this is the 1st video I've ever had to slow down to .25 speed - just to try to understand what's going on! 😳 Thank goodness there's sheet music available at thesession.org.
Is it much of an epiphany to anyone who's been playing the Violin, Viola or Cello for a while, that FIDDLING IS NOT A HOBBY?
It's like a driving, Competitive Sport, that should be included in the Olympics!
...my current competitor, is "Bang Your Frog On The Sofa". Now, if I can just learn it - BAM! I WIN! 🤗
🤔 If the notes to this reel were laser pointer dots...
I know exactly how this cat feels. (lol)

Just in case there are viewers that think these shared videos are merely entertaining fodder for chit-chat... think again!
Even Fiddlerman makes a point to mention in his beginner videos - listen to what notes you play!
Use music videos as an additional/alternative way to learn a tune you like!
Yesterday was my 2nd day trying to learn "Bang Your Frog On The Sofa", from the video in the 7th post.
Got it pretty well memorized and playing along with the video at .25 speed - very few mistakes, but no ornaments. My goal is to play this tune at .75 speed, so also looped/listened to that.
On my 1st day; I set the video to loop, listened quite a few times thru at .75 speed, .50 speed, then realized I needed it even slower - so picked at a few notes that were emphasized while listening at .25 speed and got acquainted with the rhythm. Next, I went over small sections of the tune at .25 speed, until I was sure I had all the correct notes.
Today, I'll loop the video and just reinforce my memory at the .25 speed by only playing along with the video a few times, then the rest of the time without it - maybe try to push the speed a few times. I'll also listen more times at .75 speed - trying to continually convince myself it sounds natural and will be doable for me.
You ALL can learn one of these fiddle tunes, too!
- Just pick a clean sounding video, one you really like.
- Don't concern yourself with ornaments & double stops if you're not ready - and remember, there's usually sheet music to help if you need it, but it may not exactly match your favorite video.
- Adjust the speed of the video in the YouTube video settings, will help you learn it.
- Right mouse click the video to loop it, then use your cursor on the timeline for restarting each section you need to work on.
- Those of you newer to your instrument than me, just expect to take more time, as much time as you need - there's no race.
My ear training started with seeing AND LISTENING where the notes of scales and tunes are on my "Mortimer".
...I also pick up parts of tunes all the time, then return to them at a later date - to finish learning them.

...gittin' faster! 😉 ...havin' fun! 🤭 ...nobody cares about Critter tunes! 😳
Other than this and the frog in the well i posted up above, most "critter" tunes I can think of are old time. Im still not 100% frog in the well isnt just an old American tune that someone said was based on the other. I never found a version that sounded the same..
heres one i listen to alot but forgot is a critter tune..lol
