A lot of Sailing history in the Shetland Islands & their music is very lively - learn some!
Here's a video about "The Shetland Reel Story" - from the Maurice Henderson Shetland site. Gives a link to the dance tutorial, too!
Here's a little longer program of Shetland Fiddling & Stories from Maurice Henderson. It was recorded for the 2020 Scottish International Storytelling Festival.

Know you've been playing some Shetland tunes - can't remember where I saw/heard them here on the forum.
Can you help me get them linked here?
Did you know that Audrey Parshad (Budington) plays a set that starts with "Spootiskerry" in a minor key? The 2nd tune is "Catharsis" and she finishes with "Spootiskerry" in the Major key.

A short search has me believing everyone in Shetland must play the fiddle!
I really want to learn these 'Seafaring Tunes' performed by Shetland Fiddler's Society (at Reel Orkney Music)!
Maggie Adamson on fiddle, playing "Shetland Set". This is part of the "Between Islands" project by An Lanntair Arts Centre, music of the Isles of Scotland.
Gibbie Gray plays 3 Reels from Unst (Northern Island of Shetland). "More Grog Coming", "The Lass That Me The Bed For Me", "Da Tief On Da Lum".
My favorite: a Jenna Reid Tutorial of a GREAT minor tune by Gideon Stove - info on Gideon and Jenna also here (handsupfortrad). Gideon Stove was Willy Hunter's teacher!
Willie Hunter was a Shetland Folk Fiddler and composer, with a long playlist of tunes from the area and Scotland. Find much more of his music on YouTube!
Faroe Rum, Aandowin At Da Bow, Da Forefit O' Da Ship
Traditional Shetland fiddle tunes, played by Bernard Smith (at vesternor).
Sillocks and Tatties, Aa da Ships are Sailin
Shetland Times Podcast on Shetland Fiddler Jenna Reid (Willy Hunter was her teacher).

Shetland and Norway.
Want to also mention that you'll hear some Norwegian influence in Shetland music.
Shetland was part of Norway for several hundred years before Scotland!
Kevin Henderson is a Shetland Fiddler and composer. He now makes up a third of the Trio, 'Nordic Fiddlers Bloc'.
I've posted links to some of their music in this Nordic thread:
Really great music!

Listen to "Haand Me Doon Da Fiddle" - a video/audio cassette recording of 55 tunes (all listed & time stamp) and descriptions, from Dr. Tom Anderson on the fiddle (FINDADMAGUS' Media Museum).
Here's the complete 80 page book pdf to download free.
I could pretty much get the gist of what was being talked about, but it really helps to look up a few words. (lol) Here's help with words & idioms.
What a great way to get to know little folk tunes!

You talking about the Jenna Reid podcast or the Nordic Fiddlers Bloc?
I only listened to about half of both - hoping to finish the rest this weekend.
Jenna Reid has a series of 9 Shetland Intermediate Fiddle Lessons available on YouTube to watch (handsupfortrad). Wish the video quality was better, but they're still great lessons! Here's the full playlist.
