Hello, my name is Greta I'm an artist and I am new to the violin. I started learning this week actually. I love music and usually sing but I have always loved the violin. It's the only instrument i've ever fantasized about playing so I decided to take the leap and here I am. I'm learning on my own more or less.
I've been taking lessons from this website. Very informative and learner friendly. Thank you for that Fiddlerman.
Should I try to find one on one lessons though? Would love some feedback.

Hi, welcome to the forum Greta. Fiddlerman does offer one on one Skype lessons. I've only been playing violin a couple and a half months And have been learning on my own at this point. You have to really have discipline when starting and be prepared to get frustrated and and don't try to jump ahead of yourself. Take it nice and slow and you will be rewarded soon enough. I'm a professional guitar player and already obsessed with the violin. It's not an easy instrument to learn. But it's right up on the top of my list right now for one of my favorite instruments to play (i play a lot
Have fun learning and stick around here!

Hi, Greta! I'm new to violin, too. Kind of. My niece has been playing in her elementary school and that's how I got introduced to it. I decided that the best way I could get her to practice was to get my own violin and do it with her. The funny thing is, I'm the only one who has been playing. Anyway, I want to take lessons, but they just aren't in the cards right now, so this site has been AMAZING! Just keep practicing the basics and the other stuff will fall into place!

Yes, you're so right, this site IS amazing.
There are so many resources, download all you want. And then come to the forum and chat with other beginners and advanced musicians as well.
I recommend you stick around, it will just get better.
If you think you can, or you think you can't, you're probably right.

Hi, FIDDLER(MEN/WOMEN/KIDS), I am 61 years young and started learning violin only last August. I am learning through a teacher. I attend weekly classes for which I have to travel 60 km. I kept this fire burning in me for the past 48 years.
I saw this site only in June 2011 and am a regular visitor. This forum has only nice people, young at heart and very helping with that BIG MAN -

Well, welcome suresh! You will like this site. Many beginners here from all walks of life and ages... A little hint, don't take full trust in your teacher. You're here so you have a computer with internet access. Check out all the free lessons and experiment with what you think works best for you.

High, my name is Les, my Screen name is Bullnuke, I'm retired Navy, spent most of my time in submarines, hence the submarine qualification insignia for my avatar. I've been playing AT the violin for about two years, just bought a new electric and I'm looking forward to contributing often.
Hey Bullnuke. I lived in Connecticut for 30 years. Did some overhead electrical work at the Groton Sub-base. I was in the National Guard at the time, had no trouble getting through security, as we were allowed to use the Commissary. The rest of the crew spent hours filling out paperwork. I got the company truck onsite and got a 3 hour nap!

Thanks, Fiddlerman, MGN and Paul.
Here we follow the traditional method. No Suzuki. I would like to know more about it. Here the availability of a teacher is a problem. I have my class on Wednesdays. My teacher is a self-learned person, of my age. In fact I am sharing with him information I get here and elsewhere.

Suresh, I think I was the oldest student here till you arrived. Welcome to you, and I have the same burning desire that you have, but no teacher within 400km, so I have to do it alone, and with internet help.
And welcome to all these new members, I hope you get as much as I have from this site, it's absolutely awesome.

I have just started learning as well. When I was in college, I had several friends that played both the violin and the viola, and I have to say that they were part of my inspiration. A good friend, Matt taught viola at the university, and I always loved to hear him play. I started playing around on a violin I borrowed from a friend, and I truly loved it. Now I live nowhere near them, and there isn't anyone nearby that I can learn from. We have a music store in town that is going out of business, and they have offered to come down significantly on the price of their violins, but I still don't know what to look for since I'm not very great at playing. It is great to have an instructor, but you really have to learn what works best with you. I've played music for years- clarinet, piano, guitar, and trumpet- but in my opinion there is nothing like the sound that comes from a violin when it is played well. Fiddlerman, you've got me excited once again, and I appreciate your knowledge on all of these topics. I've been seeing your videos which review violins, and have found them very helpful. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us "newbs".
