Might have been discussed already here, but has anyone tried this?  It cuts my volume in half at least, and it's 1 dollar for a pack of 50 at Wally World (Wal-Mart).

I've tried it.  It works pretty well, IMO.  But for me it was just a curiosity.  I don't need a mute for now.

But I proceeded from a youtube video that shows how to use four such clothes clips: one on each side and one between each of the G-D and A-E pairs.

Not pretty, but it's effective.

Yep, at least one or more people in my orchestra use a clothespin as a mute when we play music that requires  the violins to be muted. It works quite well and is pretty simple and inexpensive.
