Wow pky, that sounds pretty good! I love the way you accented the notes. Your intonation was really great! Way to go!

Great, you are doing the accents real nice. Making great improvements. It's going to be fantastic.

I love the angle that you filmed yourself this time. Take a good look at how your bow is traveling across the the strings and you will understand something right away. Practice straight strokes in front of a mirror a few minutes at the beginning of you sessions everyday. After you establish the straight stroke you don't have to keep looking. This has a lot to do with your shoulder movement I'm pretty sure.

Thanks Pky, Keep up the great work.

Hey guys, so I wasn't planning on practising or posting a video for at least the next week since I have 3 more exams… but then I got distracted and decided to take a break from studying. I'm really struggling with the accents/bell-like-notes though so any tips on that would be great.

Great big improvement on the 3rd finger intonation. At times it could be slightly higher.

First tip on the accents is that instead of the slight body movement you are making going with your bow strokes, make the same movement in the opposite direction. Just a slight lean in the opposite direction when making your accent, then leave the bow on the string for a longer note. Also, a little hand accent. To achieve the accent make a slight turn for pressure towards the string. Make the accent quick and release.

What you are doing now is already good and you have made great progress.

Thanks for the post. dancing

PKY, you need to work on keeping  that bow straight. You need to work on your wrist movement for straight bowing. One exercise I used to do when I first started, was bow each open string from frog to tip paying attention to the bow. also using a mirror can help as well. Keep up the good work !!

Sorry Barry, Didn't see this post when I answered. Sometimes I load all the new posts in separate tabs and answer when I get around to them. LOL
Just repeated some of what you said.

violin part one, take one

Sorry the video quality is so bad. It's my first webcam video. FYI, I left out the repeat in the middle section for the video.

This video is private.

Just edit your video settings on Youtube for unlisted. No one will find it on searches or your channel unless they have the address. It will work here though.

Haha no worries Barry, it was a good break from studying.

violin_girl

That's third finger on the D string right? What about my 2nd finger, is it still slightly off or alrightish for now? For the accent, do you mean have more pressure at the start of the stroke using my bow hand?

Thanks, I'll keep practising when I exams are over :)

^ whoa good start sara! I'm just a bit curious, do you normally tighten your bow until it's very tight?

Yes Chinny, at the start of the note. Kind of like a karate chop. Hit and release. Also the body movement in the opposite direction. Otherwise you counter act what you are doing with the bow. Movements in the same direction of the bow are counter productive that way. You'll understand when you try it.

I tightened it more than I usually do today. I was having issues with the stick hitting against the hairs earlier. Perhaps I went a bit overboard out of frustration.

Ok thank you so much for the feedback. laugh

I don't think there's anything majorly wrong with tightening your bow, it just looks a bit funny mostly, and maybe sounds a lil stiffer/bouncy? Haha yea I had to use my web cam today too but i think the sound is better on the web cam strangely enough. confused

Fantastic Sara. This project is going to be fun. Listen to your own recording to fix the intonation a little bit. For example the G is low and the Bb is high. Not by much but I am sure you will hear it.

You can already incorporate "music" into this part by phrasing more and using more dynamics. Phrase by choosing a peak on every phrase (musical sentence) and going to that point and back down again. Sing it in your head, or out loud, and try to play it the way you want to hear it. Be creative :-)

Your bow seems to be too tight but maybe it doesn't have much of an arch.

Great job, thanks for postingexactly

Hi, all,

Thank you for your constructive comments, I will work on it:P

Sorry if my video hurt your eyes and ears! As I told Terry in the shout box, I myself thought it sounds like I was squeezing a goose or a duck's neck (never really did it, one of my sister did -- just to practice how not to let a goose attack her).

Like Barry said, keep your bow straight. I think the best way to achieve that is to only use your lower arm/wrist/fingertips for your strokes and rotate your upper arm when you change strings.

Everyones sounding great, I better get on this song now too and upload for critique. Nice to see you playing Sara! Sometimes we all need a little nudge ;-)

Great work on accents pky and as far as your bowing, Chinny just posted a comment that can help you fix that right away. It looks like you are bowing with your shoulder.

You only want your shoulder to move up and down for the right angle for each string. Do your bow strokes from your elbow not your shoulder. Heck you have only been playing a few weeks and are doing great pky. Check out Barry's Christmas video again and see how relaxed he is with his bowing from the elbow.

Nice first video Sara  thumbs-up  Another great thing about everyone posting progress videos is we can play our parts along with others for practice as this all comes together.

Did my nudge get you to post  ?  smile

PS.  Nice to know I'm not the only one who dances in their chair as they play  dancing

Yep. Thanks for the nudge. Anyway, I figured if I was dishing out advice, I better put out a video too. About the chair dancing: this is the first time I've watched a video of myself playing. Made me feel a little seasick.drooling

I am much too lazy to go back over all the posts on this thread so I will post a post and if it causes any conflicts I will glady zap it.  It is mainly for 1 st violin with a bit of 2 nd violn.  I use this stuff to practice because I like having the racket as distraction.  This is 120 bpm. a.k.a. "40".
