I've been trying not to use my fine tuners, as it's worth getting used to the pegs, but I've finally decided that the one on the E-string is indispensible for an unexpected reason. Temperature fluctuations affect the E string more severely than the others because of its steel content, so, instead of having the tuners all loose, I now keep the E string fine tuner screwed-in half-way and use it to compensate for temperature - for example, every morning it's sharp because it got cold overnight. Also, hearing when it's in tune is very hard when I'm using the peg.
