I've been trying not to use my fine tuners, as it's worth getting used to the pegs, but I've finally decided that the one on the E-string is indispensible for an unexpected reason. Temperature fluctuations affect the E string more severely than the others because of its steel content, so, instead of having the tuners all loose, I now keep the E string fine tuner screwed-in half-way and use it to compensate for temperature - for example, every morning it's sharp because it got cold overnight. Also, hearing when it's in tune is very hard when I'm using the peg.

Noone that I know of gets rid of the E fine tuner. Because it is the string with the most tension and because it is steel and not flexible, it requires the smallest of movements to hone in on the perfect pitch.
