Well, i got with my rock playin buddies and took the violin and mandolin to try some unplugged stuff.  The drummer took the mando and after showing him the basic chords, the proceded to keep up quite well.

I then proceeded to pull out the violin.  Hmm, we started with "my guitar gently weeps".  that went suprisingly well.  We did a neil young song, Whiskey from trampled by turtles and a couple more.  they all went ok for only playing 2 weeks.

But i have to mention that after a couple adult beverages, i had to put the violin down and go for the harmonica.

It was still fun.  I would suggest jamming as a form of learning.  You can suprise yourself when you just Go for it.  Yea, i found my limits but in the process i think i pushed those limits and improved.

On a side note, the violin doesn't realy go with Bon Jovi "Shot to the Heart"

It's a lot of fun. BUT don't try this all you young people out there.

It's true what you say about surprising yourselves. It's loads of fun too. This is something that us classical musicians don't do enough. I play the violin for a living but I jam for fun.

I think I would poke one of my eyes out with the bow, if I attempted to play after a few beers...serenade
