A lot of people set their goal to a specific song or style, mine is to be able to play the violin as intuitively as my voice. Nobody taught me how to sing, and yet I can hum any melody that's thrown at me -most people can.
But I don't want to do this to be able to play any specific melody. With my voice I can hum and hum and hum an endless improvised melody (i work alone about 4-6 hours a day :P), or seamlessly bring songs together that you wouldn't expect to hear in the same medley.
To be able to do that with a violin is something I dream of.
I can't read music, but I understand it perfectly.

I think that your goal is a great one. Make the violin one with you. Hear what is going to come out of the instrument even before you play it.
I can pretty much do this and can therefor say that your goal is not unreasonable.
One thing that helps is to keep the violin in your hands as often as possible for example even when you are listening to music. Sing along so to speak.

My goal is quite similar. I just want to play anything i want to play... LOL!
