Actually, being a crass beginner despite being in the school orchestra as a child, I am currently dreaming of playing "Some Where Over the Rainbow"! Ha ha, not really sure what the official title of the song is but from the Wizard of Oz. I love that song and I will be very happy when my skill level gets to there, and I can play it well!

Okay, this song I would seriously love to be able to play. The violinist in the video is Mischa Elman if anyone is curious.

I imagine you've already watched "A Tune a Week # 12", Fiddlerman's version of "over the rainbow". It's great![]()
Bob
Yea!
It's easy to butcher that one Even I 'did' it in my progress thread at the critique videos, so you can certainly give it a try. It's not hard by itself, without all the decorations and stuff and still can sound quite lovely. You should most likely give it a try, at least you'll be practicing with a song that you really like, which can boost your motivation!

? @Bob Yes, I have seen the "Over the Rainbow" tune a week! Love the duet! Would love to have the sheet music for both parts but, hey, beggars can't be choosers! My only objection to the video, is that I can see the fingers but not the strings, so until I learn the fingering and am able to read the sheet music and recognise each note by name, I just keep working towards that!

Here you go
D / 0 A/3 A/2(+) A/0 A/1 A/2(+) A/3 D/0 A/1 A/0
Soooome-whereee oooo - ver the rain - bow / Way up high
G/2(+) D/3 D/2(+) D/0 D/1 D/2(+) D/3 D/1 G/3# D/0 D/1 D/2(+) D/0
There's a land that I heard of once in a lul - la - by
The G3/# means you go a half step above the normal third finger.. so just slightly reach further and the 2(+) means it's the higher version of the second finger (next to the third instead of the first)
That's the cool part... the 'Someday I wish upon a star' part is slightly more tricky (also more boring imo, without having a Felix next to you to play the second part) but it's basically alternating the second and fourth finger on the D string.. then the third and fourth... playing a few notes on the A... then for the second round you start out the same.. with second and fourth.. then switch to third sharp.. and first on the A.. then you play the good stuff again until you pass out
Anyway, don't mind me just fooling around here and it seems like you really want to postpone your dream-tune so I figured why not tease a bit, maybe it will help you jump at it sooner
Cheers!

Speaking of "giant violins"... here's my dream piece, the one I heard that inspired me to take up the viola:
And after 17+ years, I now have the sheet music and plan to start trying to learn it after my next orchestra concert! I already have a video on YouTube of myself sight-reading a little bit of the third movement, the day after I got the music.

I told myself that before I die I would learn to play "Rhapsody In Blue". I started learning one measure a week and was progressing until I thought,,hey, wait a minute, what happens when I finish? Figuring that a person needs something as a goal, I put that work on hold. I will restart working on it someday, but for now Harlem Nocturne is calling.

@MrYikes FINISH! When is a violinist ever 'finished' with a piece?

@swish_and_flick I love that tune, I bought the soundtrack way back when just for that tune (my love of that music has been around way before I ever took up fiddle playing, haha) I think (though my ears may deceive me) that tune is Kesh Jig?

@damfino It might be. I'm kind of a barbarian when it comes to names, so I just call it the "Party in Third Class Song" and people usually know what I'm talking about, haha. The other one is called "John Ryan's Polka".
Seriously, I think people look like absolute beasts on the violin when they play jigs. I totally want to join their ranks.

What I aspire to be:

When I was a kid I thought I could die happy if I learned how to play Devil went down to Georgia, but now that I am older and wiser (sort of) and finally learning how to play, there are just too many to choose from. I also like many different genres so that doesnt help lol. right now I'm working on Transylvanian Lullaby (Young Frankenstein).
