I've upgraded my music video recording capabilities thanks to Christmas gifts from Mr. Scratchy. Just had to share because it's pretty cool.

All the equipment I need is mounted on one pole stand: HD video camera, light, wireless mic mixer, large video monitor for viewing the camera image (maybe it will help me smile) and another monitor to display sheet music.

The two monitors are ViewSonic Android monitors, which are like giant Android tablets, so they have wireless Internet connectivity, can run Android apps and can connect with a video camera with an HDMI cable. I use the MobileSheets app to display sheet music.

Now that this lives in our music room, I can record an HD video easily anytime I feel like it without a lot of set-up. I can also use it as a Skype or Google+ Hangout station as the ViewSonics have built-in webcams and mics, and can run the Skype and Hangout apps.

Yep, we're geeks. :)

That's AMAZING!  The nerd in me NEEDS more info though!  I'd be VERY interested in seeing how you have everything attached to that pole, what each component is (brand, model, etc.) and how everything is wired.  So....if you get bored...which obviously you aren't.  wink

Love it Diane thumbs-up

Will have to think about doing something similar myself. It would have been useful for the Australia Day project that I'm doing. It would have made things easier for sure :)

Seen it all. Done it all. Can't remember most of dunno ..... What was I saying???? facepalm

You have definately given us a case of the "I wants!", lol. Very cool indeed! Thanks for sharing. Now you can get to work on the overhead cable cam to get those NFL style fly over shots!

I'm so glad that you all liked it!

I'll be happy to share all the gory details. Here are some of the specs.

  • Camera: Canon Vixia HF R40
  • Monitors: ViewSonic VSD220 Android smart monitor
  • Sound system: Galaxy Audio ECDR dual wireless mic system (clip-on type)
  • Pole stand: Audio 2000 AST420Y
  • Dual monitor holder: Tyke dual monitor stand
  • Foot pedal: Page Flip Cicada
  • Light: clamp on desk lamp from Home Depot. :)

Mr. Scratchy made the following modifications to get it all on the pole stand:

  1. Disassembled the dual monitor stand and mounted the holder part on the pole stand.
  2. Removed the top of a tripod and mounted it on the top of the pole stand to hold the camera.
  3. Made a wooden shelf to hold the wireless mic receiver/mixer and mounted it on the crossbar.

I added the desk lamp for better lighting. You could use a photographic floodlight but the desk lamp works fine for my purposes. I bounce it off the ceiling for a softer effect.

I should also mention that when I don't want or need to display sheet music -- given that I'm trying to play more by ear and memorization -- I can use the other monitor to play MP3 files or YouTube videos, if I want to play along with something. And I can use my Bluetooth earbuds with it so that the mic doesn't pick up the sound.

If you want to know anything else, let me know.

Yeah, I can't believe a whole year has gone by since the SoCal Jam. That was so much fun...wish we could do it again.

I'm sure we will someday KS.
Just out of curiosity, have you tried attaching the audio files to the sheetmusic. I remember that the option exists on MobileSheets.

Yes, I have linked audio files to sheet music in MobileSheets. It's very handy.

My only complaint is that I wish the media player controls would stay visible. They keep disappearing and you have to tap around to make them display again.

What I do like is that you can set the audio file to repeat, which helps in practicing.
