I assumed we would reuse this one since this is the one many of us already know.

Thanks for the votes of confidence, folks. :)

On the backtrack question, using an audible (not in-ear) backing track could muddy things if we use different backing tracks. If we use the same one it might be OK.

For the first Red Wing project, we used the Old Time Jam Machine for backing track. I remember that Barry wanted it to be audible, so I believe that's what we did and the finished project sounded fine.

We could use one of the Old Time Jam tracks again. If you take a look at the site, you'll see that there are several options: banjo and guitar, fiddle and banjo, fiddle and guitar, guitar - normal speed, and guitar - slow speed.

I recommend choosing one of the options that does not include fiddle, as we'll be supplying the fiddle part.

Please give them a listen, play along, and see whether you think the normal speed versions are doable, or whether you'd prefer the guitar slow speed track.

The Old Time Jam Machine is a great learning and practice tool. The only downside is that it doesn't give you much time to start the track, get into position and start playing.

The alternative is to use a click-track in ear so that it would not be heard on the recordings. I can create one at whatever tempo folks think is doable.

What do you think?

I am good with reusing the sheet already posted.  (good thinking 1stimestar). :)

I am good with whatever tempo...and with or without back tracking is fine also.

I will follow along and participate..since I am a complete noob to this tune.  I don't even know the song...couldn't pick it out of a line up.. (facepalm)

Since I have finally figured out how to hear a click track/metronome over my violin! LOL!!  Yes, my little tuner has a metronome and yes my computer ear buds can plug into the tuner!!  LOL!  Who knew?   Anyway, this is a tune played at jam so of course I am in on this one!!

This one is a must learn.

Violinist start date -  May 2013

Fiddler start date - May 2014

FIDDLE- Gift from a dear friend. A 1930-40 german copy, of a french copy of a Stradivarius.  BOW - $50 carbon fiber. Strings - Dominants with E Pirastro Gold string.

Come on Toni, you can do it.  It's a fun song.  We'll wait for you!

Red Wing is a fun song. It can be played fast and jaunty or slow like a ballad. I've said this before, but my grandmother used to sing Red Wing to me as we sat on the swing in my backyard when I was a little girl. The way she sang it was more like a ballad.

Yes, we will wait for you, Toni. But that does beg the question: do we need a deadline for this project? And any consensus on a tempo?

I would just put a tempo out there if you gots one so we can start with that. Put out one that you are most comfortable with > Deadline > don't really need one > it can be an ongoing thing > just for fun.

Yeah, we kinda need a deadline if we're going to do this as a group project video. A party thread can go on indefinitely, but with a project it's gotta be produced at some point.

So, what's reasonable? How about a date sometime between Halloween and Thanksgiving? That would give folks a chance to do their Halloween party video but not interfere with a Christmas project, assuming there's going to be one again this year. Or is that too soon?

I should be on track for a deadline.. closer to Thanksgiving.  I do know this time of year people get pretty busy... I can usually learn songs faster than in the past.  Ready to give it a shot. Woo Hoo.bananadancingdancinbunny

Forgive me... but should I just find the other project.. or have we reposted it here.. meaning the music.   I am having a blank brain moment.   :)

Here is a backing track I recorded for Redwing, at a mid tempo, may be easier for some players than the fast version.

I used 2 acoustic guitars and a bass guitar in the key of G.

Nice arrangement Gil - I have no excuse now, sounds like I had better try a play-along!

Thanks ! thumbs-up

Now that the holidays are way in the rear view mirror, I thought it might be a good time to revive this thread. So, would folks still like to try to make this a mini group project or would you rather make it more of a party/fiddle-along thing?

Let's try a poll:

Red Wing - Project or Party?

  • Let's do a group project!(67% : 2 votes)
  • Let's make it a party!(33% : 1 vote)
  • Meh! Red Wing, schmed wing...let's not bother.(0% : 0 votes)
Total Voters: 3
