This is an old time tune I would say.  Think it crosses over to bluegrass or the other way.  Anyway, Ive been wanting to learn clawhammer and this is the first tune Ive tried to work that into.  Drifted a little on the fiddle intonation but Im done tonight.  Probably last one I can work on for a while.  Hope you like.  Pictures are of our most terrible winter storm  :)   I can see the eyerolls from the up northers..lol .  Last pict from land between the lakes area north western Tennessee.

@ABitRusty -

Yep, nice little dusting you had there. (lol)

💖 listening to you play!  💖 seeing your photos!  💖 this tune!

I am SOOOO glad you picked up the banjo - really adds a nice touch to your music!  I still enjoy just you & the fiddle, but this is special!

🤔... you've really got a great groove & style, but I don't think you're ready for an ice fiddle, yet - couldn't hear you shivering. (lol)

Thanx for sharing this!

"Cold Frosty Morning" is on my list - even considered using one of the backing tracks available at the "BBT Bluegrass Backing Tracks", YouTube site!

...but, now I'm really busy.

Tim Linhart makes instruments out of ice - violins are suspended from ceiling to play.

Damn, that was great! The mix was perfect, and the photography was excellent and truly meshed with the sounds.

Do you use stereo mics or mix to achieve that sound? Also, what kind of camera do you use for the photos?

thanks john.. stereo on the guitar and banjo... mono on fiddle and mandolin.  canon eos rp with rf 35mm prime (without the red ring..) . 1.8 aperature mostly...100 iso except for that first shot which was probably around 6400 iso.  shutter speed pretty fast during day...pretty slow for the night but was able to hand hold that one so nothing too long.

DO-Over! lucky you..dancing

I had to play the fiddle part over and change how I did basically everything except the mandolin.  Same picts.. Black and White to tell the difference.  Its still a novice clawhammer part but very new to it.  Main thing is I think I cleaned up some of the previous versions fiddle poo poo.  Youre welcome to say which is the better of the two.  Better used loosely.

Yeah it is later.  I tried going an octave lower at beginning but i couldve went with the higher at beginning lower in middle and higher at end during solo part.  or swapped around order.   probably shouldve done the banjo in middle since weakest of all three compared to each other.  I think i had that order locked in brain from first one..good point thank you!  after all it is a fiddle forum...lol

I liked the second one for its smoother sound, but the delay in fiddle taking the lead until a minute and a half in seemed a little long to me. I preferred the first take with it coming in at the 40 second mark. The overall mix sounded better in the second one, though. I really liked them both.

What workflow do you use to make these videos? DAW for mixing audio or all in which video editing system? Currently I'm only posting raw, phone videos. I would, however, like to use Corel VideoStudio and PreSonus (if I ever learn to use it well), or Garageband on our library's Mac.

thank you for the feedback @JohnG and appreciate the input!  I definitely wanted to record that fiddle again.  The first vid i recorded it last and ( excuses 🙄 ) think I wasnt hearing the obvious till later.  What Im doing is basically just winging the backup in a take with the solo part so after its all done and mixing part done didnt consider the sparse portion at beginning so ill watch for that in future stuff.

I use presonus and premiere elements which ive had for a very long time.  years.  just kept it upgraded.  Im working on switching to davinci resolve..  if you dont have any video software that maybe something to look at.   if you dont have a full daw yet the pay version of davinci includes a daw.  so one piece of software does everything.  when i installed on my laptop it recognized all my presonus plugins so looks like it would be good.  i havent used for that and probably wont since i know my way around presonus.  you can still use phone and import video and jjst delete the audio track and replace with a daw export if you want.  simple once you do it a couple of times.  its like everything else just have to dive in a poke around the program.

@ABitRusty = Thanks, I have Presonus 5 Artist now and the Corel VideoStudio, so I think I've got to learn the Presonus and substitute the audio from that into VideoStudio. Always more good stuff to learn. However, I might look at Davinci now that you've brought it up.

The second one is a better take with the mix and instruments voicing.

Both are good second one just a tad better produced.

yeah go with what you have...  i agree.  they all do basically same stuff..some better than others on different features.  but until you need something specific that your current stuff doesnt have no reason to swap.  presonus especially.   its great and easy to use.

@ABitRusty

They are both great!  I do like the fiddle leading at the beginning better as you have it in the first one, but the second seems smoother.  Pictures are wonderful—you do good work with a camera.

Yes, I learned a new word.  “Clawhammer”.  I thought when I first listened, “I don’t know about any clawhammer, but I think I hear a banjo.”

My Musical Edumacation for the week. LOL. laugh
