Nice one, another slick example.

(Ps, someone can 'teach' you how to play, but you have to 'learn' it yourself.
Do you see the difference? I have a similar problem in Japanese, knowing which way round the verbs are used)

thumbs-up

Whoops, I see what you mean, but I deleted the movie file from my computer, so I'll be unable to change it. Ah well, hope most people won't see it.

And I've got another question: Where do I put these contest entry's, here on this sub-forum thingy?

I just started playing the fiddle, I'm 15.

I really find this video awful and think it should be eliminated from the contest.

"where other online teachers learn you the wrong techniques"... WHO are the other online violin teachers who teach wrong techniques???

"Unlike most teachers, he isn't out to steal your money"...so you call most online violin teachers "thieves"

You are saying that most online violin instructors are not only incompetent but they are also criminals. This is a serious accusation.

I've been learning violin online for a long time now and have met great teachers such as Todd Ehle, Allyson Lyne, Loralyn Staples and many, many others (the list is long) who no only are good violin teachers who need to make a living out of their profession but who also share great information for free.

I think this kind of video is very negative for a site like this and it doesn't make the rules for the contest clear at all. Besides, I noticed that you got almost 1,000 viewers in only 2 days, however you are hiding the statistics for that video. The comments under the video seem really fake too. I think the one who is out to cheat people here is you Mr Boeba...

Well welcome to the forum KFC and I do agree with you about that ad. I keep coming back to this site because I am really learning a lot from FM.

To keep a site like this going does take needing some help though. Ads n what not.... Just listen to how well Pierre plays/sounds and these cute little ad posts are not getting in my way.

For me. I don't have the time at all to hangout on forums with so many posts that do not make sense to me... I'm just here to learn and FM knows that fiddle ;-)

Hey everyone, KFC,

Welcome indeed. I agree that every qualified on-line musician needs to make a living and I don't want this to be a conflict in any way but I don't think that this is what boeba67 was trying to do. I'm sorry about not having more rules but I guess I am not experienced enough with marketing to think of it. It never occurred to me that it could be a problem. I'm just trying to find new ways of giving away these instruments and spreading the word for this site. Let's not start accusing people of being false, rather suggest that they look at it from another view. Members are free to post links to other teachers here and have been doing so for a while. I am all for learning from everyone and as many as possible. All help is greatly appreciated and welcome here.

I think the style is similar to a lot of what one sees in advertising, especially infomercials and political advertisements, where there is a contrast set up between the generic competition, which is portrayed negatively, and the advertised product, which is portrayed positively.

I personally have never been fond of the technique, although it is entirely legitimate, because it seemed overly negative and frequently inaccurate due to its reliance on hyperbole, as KFC pointed out.  (Of course, specificity is avoided because it would lead to legal problems.)  My own preference is to accurately present the product in a positive light because it is my belief that a good product can stand on its own without needing to talk down the competition.

So the style is more a matter of personal opinion.

Visually this is a very nice ad.  If you wanted to try again using similar visual effects but a different script, you could post your draft of the text in the thread first and we could help smooth out the English and give you feedback before you spent the time making the video.  (Yeah, I've always been more of a cooperative individual than a competitive one.)

@ Fiddlerman

Honestly, you could have more rules but there would be almost no way to enforce them.  I think the way you have it set up now is about as good as you can make it.

OK, I see what you mean, and think you get me wrong. You see English is not my first language, I speak Dutch, so it's very hard for me to make propper scentences. I also see what you mean by "Calling other teachers thieves" -Which I really wasn't trying to do- You're right about that, but didn't thought of that that way. (I had personal experiance with online teachers, but it was wrong of me to accuse all teachers of it)

And for the views: Well, I've got other, kind of, viral video's (well, their not mine but a from friend of mine, we share the same YouTube account) And I don't know why people comment on my video, who are you to decide whats fake and whats not? I think you really got the wrong idea of what I am trying to achieve with this video.

Oh and I don't know how to un/de-hide (or something like that...) the statics of a video, but I'll gladly turn it on for you. I hope your not mad at me, because your comment kinda hurted me.

Well, hope I hope I made it clear, even when using terrible English! cheers

Sorry you all, man... for what I could understand of it, you're right, I watched my ad again, and it's a bunch of rubbish... I'd gladly make a new one, but I deleted the Editing file, so it'll turn out differently.

My ad is like putting others down, and then licking the heels of the person to advertise, in the hope to win. Now I feel bad. frown

Don't be.
Life is all about going through the learning process. Sometimes we take other peoples ideas on board sometimes we don't. The secret is in having enough knowledge and creativity to feed on the good stuff and cast aside what isn't right for you.
Without understanding the learning process we would never move forward.

Boeba67..... I have watched your video several times, and with the exception of a few misplaced words that can be taken out or overlooked, I think your ad is pretty good.

You are saying so many possitive and nice things about the "Fiddlerman.com" site. I have yet to find a website for music lessons that even comes close to this one.

When I was searching the web, I stumbled across "FM's" instruction site and I was very, very, impressed with it. It's the only place I've found that takes you from one video to the next.

Another thing is that you can chat with the "owner" himself, who is always willing to help other's, and praises their progress, like it or not. When I joined in here, I had a picture I wanted to post (not the fiddles on the wall) but another of me in my violin class. I was about 8 or 9 years ol at the time, that was about 1951-52, I couldn't get it to post because it was too large of a file. I told FM about it, he told me to E-mail the photo to him and he would crop it and put it on here. I told him which person in the picture was me and he did it.  I don't know how this picture of the fiddles on the wall got in here now, I didn't do it.

See if you can enter another edited ad. I don't think anyone is angry/mad at you, you only used poor judgement in your selection of words, anyone can do that.  No big deal.

Warning: If my previous comment "kinda hurt you" this one might hurt you even more. All youtube video statistics are public by default. So, you or "your friend" must, for some weird reason have made them private. It's very easy to make them public again, you don't need to ask me THAT...There's a little "statisctics" button under the video player, you just have to click on it and choose "make statistics for this video public". That would add just a little transparency to the whole "thing".

Honestly, Boeba I think that if you really want that violin so badly, you should at least make a live recording of yourself playing a little tune or something, just like the girls did. Just think of it, would you be happy or proud to win that violin, knowing that you left out one of the girls, who actually recorded themselves playing and speaking to the camera? You need a little more courage to do that, but you prefer to spend hours doing video editing...The language is not an obstacle, just play a little scale, a little tune, look happy, open your OWN youtube account, invite all your friends to see it, and that'll be fine. I may even vote for you!

The rules for this contest do not specify any of these things, they specify very little, actually, someone who isn't even interested in learning violin can participate since the only condition to be eligible is to get many views of an ad promoting this site. So someone may just create an ad, get a lot of views, then win the contest and sell the violin! I really think the contest is not well organized. So you may just take advantage of the rules as they are or you can use your common sense and try to compete with the girls on more equal terms.

Well, this is enough for me on this subject, since I'm not taking part and wouldn't recommend this contest to anyone I appreciate, the page is great though, tons of useful information and great people, good luck Boeba

Don't feel bad, boeba67.  If the advertising in your country is anything like in mine then you probably didn't really notice what you were saying because the style is so common.  Since we tend to imitate what we see and experience, particularly when we're unfamiliar with a task, it's not surprising that this style was tried.

The important thing isn't that you made a mistake, some of which is even probably not as much a mistake as a translation difficulty, but that you're willing to learn and improve.

You should totally try again. (I really like what Fiddlestix said about a positive aspect of the site being that you can chat with the owner.  I don't think anyone has mentioned that yet but my memory is not great.)

Also, your English is quite good.  If I had to converse online in Dutch (or any other language for that matter) then I would be in trouble.  If, however, you want help with the text of your ad then we'd be glad to provide that.

Hmm... I don't have a camera and microphone, but I can try getting one, but honestly: Why should I try to confince you, if your so sceptic about all this? I mean, even if I did, I have to do so much efford only to win your vote, (and to be honest I don't like showing myself on the internet, and have to ask for permission by my parents)

Lol, I don't even know how to scam all of this, I don't know how to hack, and if I did, why should I ad like thousand views in 5 days, that would, indeed, look very strange.

I don't see why you won't believe me...

Don't worry about what KFC has to say...his opinion is not relevant here.

I thought your video was great... yes it needed a slight edit or two from a person more versed with the english language but the production was done well and the background music was great...

Give it another try and see if it comes out better.

I deleted KFC from the forum and if he comes back as another user and is just as aggressive I'll ban him and his IP. We don't need that kind of person here.
