Arrrr, me hearties, and 'tis another year gone.   Here be yer chance to play a few sea-shanties for the yearly ITLAPD event !

The actual "day" is 19th September so this just be a-reminding ye bilge rats that it be a-comin' round soon, although ye can be adding a fiddle tune to this thread any time you like.

[ I appreciate we have lots of others things on the agenda - the Game of Thrones project and @Barry 's StreetJelly "Strings Recital" to name but two.   But, if you can run-off a quick sea-going or in any way sea-related tune, and just post it here, that would be a blast !    Heyyy - anything will do - this was my 2014 submission - dressing-for the part is not mandatory, but does bring some fun into it ! -  ]

So, avast ye swabs, git yer fiddles out and play us a sea-shanty, else I ( yer Cap'n this year ) will have ye keel-hauled !

Yer Cap'n Grey Beard  ( a.k.a. BillyG )

I seriously recommend not copying my mistakes. D'oh - guntohead.JPG

quite entertaining I'll have to work on one of those tunes..

With violins there is no fretting over the music.

One of the most well known - "Blow The Man Down" - and it's easy - nothing over-fast, no horrid jig or hornpipe timing LOL -

There's huge list here - http://www.contemplator.com/sea/ - many with midi files to download  / listen to / get ideas from

@Ripton - I know you're a viola man - I'll get a hold of the sheet for BlowTMD (I just played it from my head in my Pirate Day 2014 ) and post both treble and alto versions here - in fact I'll do it now - wait.....   here you go - said it wouldn't take long - simple scores for BTMD for both violin and viola in D along with midi and musescore version..

Blow-the-man-Down-Viola-D.mscz

Blow-the-man-Down-violin-D.mscz

There you go Stevie - no excuse ! LOL !

Arrrrrrrr !

@Ripton lol, that's the tune I picked out, too :D  Not sure if I'll actually learn it, I might have to see if any of the hornpipes I've learned would fit just in case, haha. But I loved Popeye as a kid, so gotta love that song, hahaha.

Thanks for the interest folks @OldOgre, @Ripton, @damfino, @SilverHalide

Whatever you come up with will be great, and, really although the actual "day" is the 19th there's no need to bust a gut ( lol, violin joke ! ) to do it for then - just look on this as a party-thread and add whenever you want.

Steve - I just SO wish you hadn't mentioned Sailor's Hornpipe.....  and this is the reason - Alison Sparrow's speed-challenge -  - and she STARTS at 150bpm.....

Ohhhh - don't let that put you off - speed ain't everything LOL

@BillyG I love that video of hers, I went back to it a couple nights ago. I wish I could play that fast, lol!

Edit to add I found a simpler version (no shifting) that I can work with. I can shift to 3rd ok enough now, but still feel more comfortable just staying in 1st for now (at least for my Pirate day video :) ). So I think I'm ready to start working on it, yay :)

Is the work day over yet so I can go play my fiddle? pirateship.gif

Well on that "note" I will endeavor to accomplish this great task .... at 25BPM... Now how will that be for a speed challenge? Sort of like Popeye on Ativan.

LOL ! Nice pic Mandy - you've brought us a new crew-member !

Arrr, me flea-ridden-scurvy-crew, say welcome aboard to our new ship-mate Fiddler Jack !

I see's yer strung-up already wi' yer neck well-stretched, so thar be no point stringin' ye up from the yard-arm if ye misbehave.  It'd have tae be a keel-haulin' fer ye Fiddler Jack.

And at least ye'll be a-floatin' if ye falls o'erboard.

[ Yup, it gets worse......   I blame me crew, yer all as daft as yer cap'n, long may it continue ! ]

Yer Cap'n,

   Grey Beard

Arrrrr, whar's me rum ye accursed deck-swabbers?   I'll bet it was that @Barry lad that broke into me cabin and hid it - and right now, it be the time o' day fer a deep-swig o' the hard-stuff...

Hehehehe !   How's the Sailors Hornpipe going there Mandy ?   I've messed with the first part occasionally for the last couple of years ( just because it's one of the many tunes in my head LOL - never really tried to do it properly....   Must admit though, if Fiddler Jack is working on Vi Wickams sheet there, he won't be doing bad - looking forward to hearing him play for sure !thumbs-upthumbs-updrummerdrummer)

[ OK OK, so I have officially "lost the plot" ....  but that's not such a bad thing at the age of 64...   I believe it is my constitutional right to be allowed to do that....rofl ]
