@Schaick You could do a "live test", have someone (friend, or fellow fiddler from here) meet you over on streetjelly and you go live for just a few minutes to see if your sound/video come through with the USB mic. I did a test show as my first one, wasn't very prepared, had my laptop stacked on a bunch of pillows to get the camera at the right height, and Billy and Barry were on to watch the test and help me out.

My guess is the mic issue is just like mine, sounds dead for the test unless I have the mic selection box open in the window, and then works fine once I go live. I don't understand it, but it works.

@damfino  yes BUT I also had the -"A plugin (Shockwave Flash) is not responding."  issue.  Basically everything was freezing and going blank when I used the mic and it carried over to when I wasn't even using the mic!!

Thanks @Barry  Note to self - turn down computer sound!!  I am planning to perform with just my laptop built in mic.  My hubby returned the Samson mic so fast it made my head spin!!

Win 10 upgrades ????   D'oh.....  Been the total pain of my life last couple of weeks ... I was already on Win 10, and, it was "fine" ( as it can be!) - but then I allowed Win 10 to do the "Anniversary" update - which - I should add - with 512Kb broadband took all of 20 freakin' HOURS.... (seriously!)  - and now I'm totally goosed - I can still use Adobe / Shock-wave Flash for live on SJ - but - I can;t use any ( of the three video/editing recording programs I have ) to record an mp4 ( or any usable format ) file...  So, for recording videos, I'm dead in the water right now - can't even roll back - Microsoft, in their wisdom, seemed to assume that after 10 days, it "must be OK" and the "windows.old" ( needed for rollback ) was auto-deleted.   I HATE MS WITH A PASSION....   just saying....    I of course do HAVE disks for my legal damned copy of Win 7 - ( to which the now "no-going-back-upgrade" was applied, on-line ) - BUT - I've got around a 500Gbyte backup to do to go down that road and - unlike "normal backups" this scares the bejasus outta me........   I am SO PI55ED OFF....   prob nothing to do with @Schaick's problem... my prob is with the webcam -  but - just to add - as far as the Samson USB mics go - they should simply be "plug-and-play" - no special drivers needed or anything like that - they should just work...  my Samson mic ( a CO1U ) still works fine on the Win 10 ( Anniversary Edition ) - it's the damned webcam - a "known issue" by Microsoft, apparently, with an alleged "patch/fix" in September - they clearly DID NOT SAY WHICH YEAR....

I am seriously losing the will to live here...

@charles mentioned a Uni* in chat - I have an old Red Hat Linux / Unix / Bill's Own variant on another machine -  but - seriously - is it really worth the effort - dunno - just "plumbing the depths of despair" ATM - at least I can get on to SJ....   this is NOT funny....

....hmmmm  happy bunny - bunny_pole_dancer- well - NOT EXACTLY ! ( LOL )

Yes Windows 10 came with my new computer that my 11 month old granddaughter just knocked to the floor and broke the flip back hinge.  And then when I tried to close the computer it cracked the really cool touch screen that is no longer a touch screen!!!

It is true, when it rains it pours!!!

I did some more research and I think the problem was Chrome.

OH NO!! I did not think to test the internal mic until just now.

YAY!!! The built in mic works!!!

@BillyG   windows 10 decided to somehow remove the drivers that run my magicjack phone..so the phone is back on my xp system. I refuse to give up this xp computer..lots of sheet music files and backing tracks on it. Its in pretty rough shape though, a few usb ports have given up..I plan to buy a used computer and transplant my hard drive eventually

Hey all.  I got on Street Jelly and had hubby listen to me in our dining room.  I tried playing in the water closet and then in the dining room trying to compensate for having just the laptop mic.

He said the dining room was best, but still sounded tinny.  I am thinking I should try the living room next.  It is our biggest room.  I just read bigger rooms are better.

If you want the room to be more echoey, try creating as many flat surfaces as possible. Absorbent things like drapes will tend to absorb echoes, and "bumpy" surfaces will break up the sound waves.  I'm not suggesting you clear out the room, but taking down a few pictures, opening drapes, that kind of thing might help.  Although "tinny" is usually a bandwith problem, not lack of reverb.  Hope the idea helps.

@charles  Yes  I did get that echoey sound.  It was too much for my bluegrass!!

I have even tried playing behind the mic into a corner.  There is a whole discussion about it online. While the sound was a bit better, it caused my high notes to just disappear.

I am actually glad I am having external plug-in mic troubles - I am learning so much about sound.

Bandwidth - I had no idea what this was but read up on it.  Hubby said we have the next to the highest.

Guess what else I learned?  You can make a microphone out of a speaker.  We happen to have a couple of speakers lying around.  I might just get creative.

@BillyG  Well sort of sorted!!  I am looking forward to the fiddlefest too.

With too much echo, try using some area rugs. Of course curtains, furniture and such help too. Most people like a lot of echo. I remember practicing in a bathroom when I was young because I enjoyed the echo so much. :)

It is interesting that you can make a microphone out of a speaker. The way microphones work is very interesting. I enjoyed reading about microphones on Wiki a while back: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microphone

That's neat, I never knew you could turn a speaker into a microphone.

I love a nice echo-y room. I need to empty out a room in my house for practicing in, lol.

I'm really sad but I'll be missing the Fiddlerfest.

Fedex offered Michael and I suite tickets to Sundays 1PM Dolphin vs Bills game. It's going to be a great experience for me since I haven't seen the new renovated stadium and have never seen a game in a suite.

I hope you guys have a great time, enjoy performing, and get a great turnout.

And it's looking better all the time - 7 confirmed - myself, Schaick, Barry, Rob, Mandy, Toni, Jasmine - and both Dennis and Diane suggest they can hopefully slot-in sometime during the event !

Anyone else up for it ?    If you don't want to play, you can still come along and join the audience !    Check out StreetJelly for Sunday 23rd, with shows entitled "Fiddlerman Fiddlefest"

Thanks Bill. I'm sure you guys will have a blast. I'm going to really enjoy the experience. Don't know about the game but the treatment will be fantastic. :)

For anyone who hasn't visited StreetJelly, I highly recommend it. It's a great way to work on your performing skills and get used to playing in front of others in a soft kind of way. Visit and check people out as well. I popped in spontaneously last night and @Barry was performing on his birthday. How cool is that?

Barry gave a great show, party style, along with a bunch of friends. Looked like he was also having a great time.

yay...one sleep till Fiddlefest day.

I will be gone til 11:30  or so Cali time, then I will hang out and watch.  I have had running injuries and I didn't get to learn new material.  ( I play standing up)...even when I could play sitting down the painkillers had me so groggy.

Right ankle and left foot are healing up.  I am just happy to be a part of it all.   ;)
