FINAL UPDATE: Pictures of my lovely Cecilio CVA-400 can be found here. Cecilio CVA-400 Viola My hat's off to KK Music Store for their excellent customer service in handling the situation and also to Cecilio for the beautiful new Viola. It looks and sounds lovely!

thumbs-up

Original post is left below for historical purposes:

My new Cecilio CVA-400 Viola from KK Music just arrived via UPS, and I must say that my initial impression is one of disappointment.

The "satin" finish is uneven and actually shiny in some spots. The fingerboard has a sharp edge on one side, and the neck has visible, non-matching wood filler along its length.

It may turn out to sound wonderful (in somebody else's hands, of course), but I can't help but hear my son's instructor's "I told you so" reverberating, even from this distance…

I'll take pictures tonight when I get home from my office.

You should probably not accept it then. I would contact kkmusicstore and get an exchange.exactly Ask them if they could check the next one before sending.

I took a load of photos to detail the good, bad and ugly.

Have a look.  (dialup warning - lots of big photos)

It's a bit different than the studio photos of the product.cry

I'll be calling KK Music later, if I can get a break in my workload. I was at my office 16 hours yesterday.

P.S. I get tickled by the requirement to do a little math to post. I think in the next upgrade to the BBS software, you should require some history and geography, too. cool

Or classical music trivia, that should keep me from posting off topic!

Normally I would have said that you get what you pay for but I haven't seen any bad instruments from kkmusicstore yet. Especially not the scrolls.

Ask them to take a look at the viola before sending out the next one if possible. I think that they are easy to deal with but others on this site have had experience with that. Most are more than satisfied with their purchase. Hope you don't get another lemon next time.

I just saw the pictures you posted, I can't believe that left the factory like that! The pegbox and scroll and neck and endpin are horrible! The bow looks like it was stored outside for a week. I bought a $100 blue violin from the KKMusic store. It is far from perfect, but nothing like that! That is a real downer, kinda kills the enthusiasm, but don't let it get ya down. As far as I know they have a good reputation for customer satisfaction. Go get'em Headcheese!

Great detail pictures. Sorry to see the viola is such a disappointment. And that bow does not look new. Maybe "refurbished."

I'll be giving them a call during my lunch break and offering to send them the photos.

doneUPDATE:  I spoke with Jessica at KK Music Store, who was very friendly and polite, and she was quite interested to see the photos of the instrument. I took your advice and mentioned that I wanted the next instrument to be personally checked and something that they would actually be proud to have their name on.

UPDATE #2:  I sent a long, detailed email with a select few (27!!) photos, each annotated with detailed notes to KK Music and just received the following reply:

"Dear head.cheese,

Thank you for following up with us. We have received your pictures; we sincerely apologize for the quality of this viola. We can offer to have UPS pick up the package and deliver it back to us. Please place the viola, case, and accessories back in the original box it came in. We will schedule UPS to pick up the package tomorrow. According to our records, we delivered the package to your work address. Because we delivered the package to that address, they will pick up the package at the same address. Please give the box to the receptionist so UPS may pick up the package. Once we receive the package back from UPS, we will go ahead and re-ship you a new viola. We will make sure to check the viola for any flaws before shipping.  Once again, we apologize for the inconvenience, and thank you for your understanding.

If you have any questions or interested in any of our products, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Best Regards

I have a suspicion that these sort of distributors may like to have legitimate documented customer complaints because this gives them important clout back to THEIR suppliers.

And it is no big deal to supply another instrument from their warehouse of landed items.

So, hopefully, it may turn out to be a win-win even given a bad start.

As a comfort present to you for your bad luck I prepared some Viola parts for you to work on when you get your new instrument.afro

How many other Violists do we have on this forum?

Oh cool, yea I have a 5 string electric violin so the lower 4 strings are essentially like a viola. Its useful if you want to transpose songs etc :)

UPS reports that the return shipment to KK was received and signed for yesterday. Now I guess I'm waiting on their assessment, and for someone to ship a replacement back to me. Hopefully, a well-inspected replacement...

There isn't a "fingers-crossed" smiley or emoticon in here, is there?

Apparently, patience won't be too necessary, as I just received confirmation that the replacement viola is on the truck for delivery to me today.

Had I known, I wouldn't have rode my motorcyle to work today...LOL

There will be fresh photos tomorrow, one way or the other.
