Thinking of checking out 2 used fiddles for sale in town here.  one is a Zeta pro-series, the other is a Maginni with LR Baggs pickup.  The asking price on the Zeta is more than double for the Maginni.  ($2500 vs $1000). The Zeta does come with a pernambuco bow. Now I may not be ready for an electric, but then I realized I don't even know the dif between an electric and one that has a pickup on it!  Talk about dumb! I was thinking of those one that are a combo acoustic/electric like the Realist and that Silvercreek model. Regardless of my ignorance, I am considering checking them both out! Altho I'm gonna have to hock or sell my wedding ring & the guitar I hardly even touched.  Otherwise I'm stilll interested in the Realist. I figure life's too short, definately going to get another fiddle one of these days.....

Thoughts, anyone?  Mucho appreciato.

I think if you are not going to get a solid body (or getting one with a pickup on it rather than built into a solid body..) the realist as you mentioned is definitely the way to go. One of my friends has one, and it has such a good solid tone acoustically, and sounds great on an amp with effects also, plus that 5th string is very nice when you want to dig in on "bassy" sounds when electric.

My apologies on the fact that I cannot compare the zeta or maginni though, as I have only seen them in videos. I know that FM has a review on a 5 string realist, check out the fiddlershop. Would be around the same price range, and wouldn't be used.

OK, What made the Zeta name popular was their pick-up systems The Zeta pro-series did not have anything special in itself, the jazz fusion violins had the double piezo mics under each string at 45% angles to avoid the downwards motion bad sounds which made it a popular choice. I don't remember the name of the company that took over for Zeta now.
The pickup in the Zeta pro-series is not that great plus you'll be getting an old one. I vote not to get that violin. Sounds like you'll be paying for the name and I'm almost certain you'll be disappointed.
