The hair on a violin, viola, cello and contrabass bow needs to be tightened to use and loosened when resting. Simply turn the nut located at the end by the frog clockwise until the hair separates from the stick at about the thickness of a pencil. Approximately 1/4 inch. After playing for a while you may decide that your playing and bow requires more or less tension to achieve the results that you desire.
