It's my 1 weekiversary for playing violin, so I thought I would make a video of my progress. Feedback welcome!

This is really good for one week! Intonation is impressively on point.

You'll get a straighter bow if you avoid moving the right upper arm except to change strings. Your left hand looks like it's gripping the neck of your instrument quite tightly, but most people do that at some point and it doesn't hurt at this early stage. (Eventually, you'll want to just rest the violin on the inside of your thumb.) At least it looks like your left wrist is in a good position.

I wish I'd been able to play like that after a week.

I can't fault anything, except that I agree with Andrew about the right upper arm. This will become more important when you start playing the D and G strings.

Your right hand shape is great. It may be a good idea to keep the top of the hand sloped and pointing to your left instead of upwards to aid fluidity of bow movement?

That's a WOW for week 1... it sounds like you're capitalizing on having experience on other instruments :-) You're looking pretty comfortable with the chinrest/shoulder rest set up you have too!

When I work on quieting down my upper arm (except to lift and lower the plane of the bow to change strings, as AndrewH mentioned) I go bowing in front of a mirror. For starters, I even hold the violin body with my left hand on the upper right side and practice on open strings... slowly at first. 10 months in and I still do this on occasion. As you start experimenting with longer bow strokes that use the lower and upper quarter of the bow, this business with a "quiet" upper arm becomes even more important.

You're already getting a confident sound out of your instrument which would indicate that you're intuitively using the natural weight of your right arm. That's a big plus.

Keep it up and thanks for the video!

@FortyNothing you obviously have a good ear for intonation, very good for 1 week. The previous posters gave good tips about right and left arm. Keep up the good work :)

You're doing great :D The only thing I was going to mention has been brought up already (avoiding bowing with your shoulder). Keep up the good work :D

I agree with everyone here. Great work for one week. You are talented.
Also, you get a badge for posting in the critique corner. :)

I suggest that you not be in a hurry on the half notes. The rhythm is almost correct but a bit too short on the half notes. Take time to enjoy those longer notes and end of phrases. A bit, like when you talk to someone for example, if that makes sense. To better understand what I'm referring to, just count while you listen to your video.
