bowmaster...(?) another crutch. If you're bending your thumb holding that bow, I fret to think you're hangin' on way too tight. Did you see my grip in the video? Loose and supple, easy to move and no bent fingers or thumb.

Ah, but I am seriously double-jointed. I played for months, struggling with pain until I had an Incredibow put in my hand. Eureka! The grip (for me) needs to be larger in diameter and have some "grip" or my thumb collapses or I drop the bow - there was no fix for me, even with strength building exercises. So far. I still play with another bow without the BowMaster to see how it feels, but my hand is not strong enough yet. I realize that it is a bit of a crutch, but at least I'm playing without pain and improving my technique. I look forward to the day I can play with an unadorned bow smile

Oooh, I like those.  I, too, am double jointed and have trouble properly holding onto bow and fiddle.

So many options; so little money.  laugh

LOL! I hadn't thought of that! Of course, we can't seem to keep a roll around for more than half an hour around here...The Bowmaster at least isn't that visible to an audience.

WOW Duct tape, I can wrap it around my wrist to keep it straight and tape the bow on my hand. I could even put little pieces on the tips of ny fingers when I play for a long time. Can you make strings from duct tape? I would bet you could. Why stop there, no more hide glue just use duct tape. How about a duct tape violin to go with the paper and balsa one.

cdennyb... I watched your orchard video 5 times and on the last viewing I saw something strange. All the painstaking work to rehair your bow and you're using the Chinese version in the "Orchard" video.  LOL,,, what's up with that ?dunno

OK, I was on the other violin site, String Academy, and asked a question about bow hair. Here's an excerpt from Tom Baker of (Bakers Rosin of Florida) and I found it so interesting I had to post it here for all to absorb.

======================

It's more complicated than you might believe, but this is something I know a little about.

The differences between horsehair which really matter for us are, surface structure and elasticity.

The surface structure of true Mongolian is far and away the most efficient at manipulating the strings because it has even, consistent striations that face in every direction and every angle.

Elasticity - In our case it's a test to see how far a type of horsehair will stretch before it becomes permanently deformed.

Chinese hair will deform at just 2 Newtons of applied force.

Mongolian does much better - 2.77 N.

For the record, there is no such thing as quality bleached hair.

As is with strings and everything else, there are many variables and no one type of horse hair leads in all the positive attributes, so we try to select one that leads in the most important areas...surface construction and Elasticity.

For example, Canadian hair has amazing elasticity and will stretch without deformation with as much as 4.53 N, but the surface pattern isn't as useful as is the Mongolian.

Because surface construction has a greater effect on what we perceive whilst playing, it therefore is more important than elasticity.

The quantity of hair used has mostly to do with the resulting feel of the bow.

The more hair, the more spongy feeling. The less hair the more bouncy the feeling. (under the same tension)

Generally speaking, most bows have too many hairs on them as far as I'm concerned.

Also, quantity has a variable...hair width.

Fine Mongolian has a smaller diameter than does coarse Mongolian and so 150 hairs of Mongo-fine will have about the same surface area as 125 hairs of Mongo-coarse, but both work out to about the same feeling as far as effect goes.

Those Mongols really know their horseflesh smile May be something special about the breed? Curiouser and curiouser...But also very interesting.

Thanks, cdennyb.  I was wondering what was up with the different breeds.

My horses are both glad that they're Quarter Horses and so may keep their lovely tails.
