I'm watching Violin Masters on WFYI.  It's about Stratavari and Guarineri.  (not sure how to spell either).  It is amazing.

Loved this video, thanks, ozmous.

Notice @:34 and again at 6:45 how they hold the violin in their left hands, the thumbs are not under the neck but the violin is resting in the fork of the thumb and index finger.

@5:03 he say's " rumbles and growls"....... sounds like mine..always growling, maybe it's the rosin.      Ya think ?

Actually, it works well to hold the violin like that and makes for a quicker vibrato but not for those who have short fingers. Also, when he goes up on the violin, beyond 6th position, you can't keep it like that.

So true about moving up to higher position's. When I hold / support the violiin with my thumb under the neck, I lose track of where I am and tend to be off key when I get back to the open G, which I use on many song's for a last note in the run. My thumb doesn't stick up quite as high though, I lost 1/2" of it in a power-planer accident 40 yrs ago.     dazed

That was very cool to watch, I cant help think of FM $90 black spray painted violin though.

LOL, Good point.

I guess you can't buy a strad for $99 bucks. ROFL
