Anyone interested in a "Reading Corner" offshoot of the breakroom?

I just read a post in the Breakroom, "Martin Hayes Shared Notes". This gave me a thought, but I want to make sure it would be used.

Are there any members interested in a Reading Corner as an offshoot of the Breakroom? If someone has a music related book, they could discuss it here and provide a link where to buy it (Please check to see if it is available through Fiddlershop before before posting any other purchase options). These would not be genre subject because there are genre rooms and it would be too much for this little "Reading Corner". They would be better in their genre rooms.

Subject suggestions: Composers, the instruments themselves, books that are used for reference for identifying instruments, about string generalities, etc. Anything you have read that has to do with music or bowed string instruments, except the exception above.

I was also thinking about fiction stories about a musician, about a composer, an instrument, anything where the main subject or character's main dilemma, issues, etc is music related. If this is of interest, I will create a non-fiction reading corner and fiction reading corner, if either is approved.

If anyone posts about a book, they must give the title, author and a brief summary about it, and why they found the book useful or interesting for non-fiction, a good read and interesting for fiction. You can't just post a title and author willy nilly without information. You must have read the book to be able to this, and provide some information, including what it did for you. If a book is posted without any information from the original poster about how the forum member used the book, how it helped the forum member, how the forum member liked it, etc, I will reply with a question asking about the book. If the question is not answered within a week, I will just delete the entire thread with that book, including replies, because the original poster obviously did not read it and does not want to discuss it, just interested in promoting it. This room is for discussing said books, not to just promote a book.

Only one book would be mentioned and discussed in a thread to keep the discussions clean and easy to follow. If you have a similar book, start a new topic and just refer to the other thread in your discussion, you can include a link to that other discussion.

My hope is that we can get some discussion about them going.

It would be great if someone else got the book at the library or bought the book. read it and it was discussed. In order for another member to have any interest in getting the book at the library or by purchasing, the OP needs to be clear about what the member liked, info about the book, etc. No copying anything from the books to the forum. Page references can be used.

This is not for videos or movies. This is for books.

This is all preliminary to see there is interest, I will ask Fiddlerman about it. Just looking to see if there is interest in a Reading Corner.

sounds interesting.. more than likely id still use only breakroom to do a drive by " this is a good book " and bypass the report.  but sounds like it could be something some people use.  sounds like alot of rules to keep straight over a book suggestion though...for me...

Not really. Just read the book and start a discussion, not just post the title. If there is no structure it will just lose its purpose.

I think it would be great to have a place to recommend books!

But, just like Abitrusty, think anything more than that will be a turn off to many people.

Doesn't mean I wouldn't love it if someone offered a nice synopsis and discussion could always evolve, naturally.

I can't say I've read any book about say, strings technique (I have several), from cover to cover - and much less that I'd be able to summarise them in any way. Though some have been helpful. But I suppose you're not talking about technique books there ? It's easier to do for fiction books certainly.

Apart from fiction books, there are also movies centering on music (be it fiction, or documentaries). This section would not include them, right ?

@wtw I was thinking books, but I am not sure if maybe discussing music themed movies my get more action. I think being books, in and of itself, sounds nice, but maybe including music themed movies might be viable, too. Just some place where instead of someone just posting somewhere they read or, as you are somewhat suggesting, saw a movie themed (in one way or another) maybe someone else saw or read it, they can talk about it and maybe interest others. With a place to go for that, instead of it being scattered all over, it might be interesting for current members and maybe guests who are looking for more than a discussion of what we have now. Being in the breakroom, which is defined as music related, from its beginning, these would all have to be music themed. I think movies, books, etc would work.

This is just a thought or idea in its infancy, so knowing someone mentioned movies, helps. I am thinking of guests that visit and enticing them to join to participate, also.

So, what the heck, let’s include music themed movies. I think, that nowadays, more people watch movies than read books. I will bring this up with Fiddlerman.

I wont/didnt just post a title.  the link provides a synopsis.  if interested ask over there and ill discuss more about what ive thought about it.  I saw no reason for a lengthy post unless someone wanted more.  It was redundant.

A seperate book area could be handy i just dont like the requirements of a book report.  lol.. Now if you want to give out an author or book report badge then you may have something!!

Oh, not a lengthy book report. Just something to get a discussion started. They were just ideas of what to maybe use to get someone to discuss it with you. Basically, not just say this was a good book, title and author. Just something to get a discussion started, just the title and author does not do that, that just promotes a book.

Thanks for the  input. If I can do it, it will be a little while. I still can’t sit for long or my knee stiffens up.  Very painful to have to loose up because I sat too long. I don’t want to start it, and then have to get up and walk around, sit down and work on it, get up … Might mess it up 😂.  I need to be able to sit with my legs idle a little bit longer than I can. Just getting ready by seeing if there is interest, and the OK to do it.

I like the idea of a spot for Music-related Books (that aren't just score notation) and Music-related Movies.

A good story is timeless, whether on paper or film!  😎
