Hi everyone, I haven’t been here in a few years and honestly, I haven’t played my violin in over a year. I injured my left rotator cuff about a year ago and couldn’t even Really move my arm let alone hold my violin. I had to quit my lessons and basically put my poor violin away (I did look after it during the year). Tonight I picked it up and played a few short Christmas songs 🤗. My shoulder and back are hurting now and I’ll have to ice it but it was worth it.

In my lessons I was working on Suzuki book 5 but tonight I felt like I had never played a day in my life, so difficult and my arms were wobbly and stiff. I’m going to try to do short practices a few times a week until the new year and then contact my old teacher and see if she has any spots left for students.

mischa91,

Welcome back, I'm sorry to hear of your injury, that's a ruff one for sure.

thanks! It’s been rough, my shoulder is at maybe 80% what it was, I think this is the best I can hope for at this point. I’ll probably have to go back a ways in my lessons and relearn some things and hope my shoulder can cope with the extra strain.

Welcome back to playing and the forum @mischa91 !

Yeah - work at it, but don't over-do it !   Patience, patience - it will hopefully improve (the shoulder that is!) over time.   Oh boy - a whole year without playing - you must be overjoyed to feel you're able to work on it again !  Great news !

I seriously recommend not copying my mistakes. D'oh - guntohead.JPG

Please make your own, different mistakes, and help us all learn :-)

Welcome back!

If you were in Suzuki Book 5 I would imagine you have a lot of latent skill that can come back with hopefully not too much work. My intonation tends to slip when I haven't played for awhile. Since I began to play I maybe only missed a month at most due to a medical issue. Maybe a week for vacation once or twice a year. But yeah....rotator cuff issues would do it for me too. Hope you get back to 100% again!

Thanks! I've found a new teacher who is willing to go slow and accommodate my injury which is nice. I do feel great being able to play again, i couldn't even hold my violin without pain about 6 months ago, so its really great now.

Yes, i think so too. I played yesterday for about 25 minutes and played a piece from book 4, it went okay, a little pitchy and slow but not too terrible. It'll get there eventually.
