Motivation is easy to find in the short term... I'm almost to the six month mark with a violin.
There are those who have learned tons in that time frame, and others who shall remain unknown. I find it to be a great stress relief.
But to add a personal side to all of this.... I bought a violin at the end of February. Started lessons the first of March. Wife went into the hospital first of April. Maybe by the first of September she'll have a knee again. I'd do anything for her...
But if I can begin to learn to play a violin under my circumstances... anyone who wants to learn can do so. We love when travel to Mexico... so let's play some music

After watching all the videos posted (and I have a couple myself), I've decided that the best motivation is "Self Motivation".
I think I recorded this video in about 2013 and posted it then, but here it is again.
The thread (I titled) "Play Misty for Me".
Today I've been trying to record a new video, but I can't figure out how to use the "WinMovieMaker" for Windows7 and the Youtube movie maker is beyond me too.
I can get them to record, but it's hard to edit.
I'm not sure if the violin in the video is my original cheap Chinese violin or the Fiddlerman Concert Master which I've had about 2 1/2 years now.

Oh ... How time goes by and one forgets gets about a song/tune.... And then you hear it and close your eyes and you know.... Oh it's beautiful.. it is so beautiful.. It's my mom's music... That's what I think... Music my mom referred me to growing up. It is just so beautiful and hearing you play it was so amazing... Thank you @fiddlestix ...That is pure motivation and another song I want to play. Many thumbs up for you posting that !!! I am off to hear it again. Sigh....

My last post was when I was in a funk... We all get in those.
While all of my videos I've posted so far have been violin related.... sometimes it's not violin music that strikes a chord and motivates us.
I've been learning "Sad Romance" the past few weeks and making some progress. Granted I'm only playing it in first position, but it's satisfying to learn something you can expand on as your skills increase. Besides... it's a great tune.
So I'll post a non-violin video this week. Music can carry a lot of emotion, no matter the instrument.

I have to admire @fiddlestix for posting videos of him playing. I finally have the technology to do the same... so maybe one day I will as well.
Some of the best motivation does not come from professionally edited and scripted videos... but people putting their heart into what they could do at that moment in their lives. The raw emotion says it all and I appreciate the share.

Ok... finally making some progress on Sad Romance. I like it first of all... but I learned some new things with it as well. Such as the symbols on sheet music to play two notes in the same bow direction without slurring them. Then the symbol to do a finger slide as opposed to a slur. I still play most of it in first position as that is where I am at in my skills, but the music has two notes it calls for that are slightly higher and in second position. So I stick with three songs for now (The Blackest Crow, Sad Romance, and The Irish Washerwoman) and my workbook that I'm using.
Videos like this one are what have me back to regular practicing again. Got tied up for a bit, but somehow a nice hour or two a day window has opened back up

@Taper123
Nice videos. I am unfamiliar with The Blackest Crow. I like it.. especially when the double stops kick in.
I have been playing Sad Romance for a while now. I usually wimped out the last part .. because of the shift. I have been practicing it almost everyday for a week or so now. I can't for the life of me get the shift right to hit the C note on the E string with third finger.. I am at 50%.. it drives me crazy.. the second shift is easier, but I can tell I am using my eyes instead of muscle memory.
Can you (or anyone else that is familiar answer a question about that)???
So on the last part of the song there are two shift on the estring.. (I am at work and don't have the sheet with me.. ) But there is the part that has a Shift and I believe the notes are -------- A B A B C B A G.... This is the second shift in the last segment... so if you are following me.. would you shift right away... or would you play the First A in first position after the G note.. then shift starting with the be note.. OR... would you play the A and B note 3rd finger and 4th finger and then shift to the C note? IF this makes any sense at all.
My friday motivation came from the Fiddlerman House of the Rising Sun Project. It motivated me to work harder and I enjoyed everyone's parts, but those that nailed that tricky part really showed me that I have a lot of work and practice ahead of me, but it is attainable.
Cheers everyone.!
