I am dealing with new students not shifting well to positions and felt the need for a simple exercise exclusively for practicing and learning third position shifts.

Practice shifting from first to third position slowly at first. Slide on each finger from first to first, second to second, and third to third and steadily increase tempo for best results.
Try to memorize the feeling of where your hand ends up, either by feeling a guide when reaching the position or by memorizing the feeling in your left elbow when bent the proper amount. Remember to rely strongly on your hearing both in anticipation and arrival to the note.

Try to learn IIIpos. because of v1 Christmas Project. When i go there - my palm doesn't touch the violin duncecap . I tried to touch it by bending (just a bit) my wrist inside, but then can't place fingers properly. Tried to turn it a bit to the left - fingers problem again drooling. Am i doing something wrong, or touching is not a necessary ?

Not necessarily doing anything wrong. Your palm might be 4th position. You need to memorize the feeling of 3rd position by shifting back and forth and remembering the feeling. Also depend a lot on your hearing even before you get to the note. In other words hear the note with your fingers. dazed

Hard to explain. Good luck drummer

I am working on czardas. It is the first third position tune I have tried. Sliding into third actually sounds right on some parts of this piece.

Thank You, FiddlerMan! You've just saved me from paranoia party.  Didn't know if i am able to "hear the note with fingers" duncecap. I'll definitely try devil-violin
