Well it means you could play it as a whole upbow, or a whole downbow, and it doesn't matter because in measure 13 it returns to a downbow at the beginning of a measure.

In that case I would have to take issue with the arranger.  The notation suggests that 7 (long) beats on one down bow ( "B" note ) is a welcome option.  Maybe it is for someone smilesmile

Good answers everyone. I use brackets for optional bowings. In this case I did it because I don't want the bow-change to be heard. If you can camouflage the change it would sound best. Secondly, the placement of that change is completely up to you, thus the brackets. I would strongly recommend a well thought out bow change there.

I have been trying to hide my bow change, how is this done? I saw a little oriental girl on youtube do it during a song. I cannot tell how she did it.

I've also tried the bow change, but without success.  I've watched violinists do it many times, and it's probably one of those 'feel' things, that you practise with the feel of it until it's right.

I was practising in front of the camera this morning, I'm just trying to upload to Youtube, but it might be unsuccessful due to my slow speed.  Will keep you posted.

I had a look at my videos, and of course they sound terrible, but I think there's a problem with bow hold too.  I'd like people to offer suggestions please.

Thanks (if I get it on here)violin-student

Remember to play this piece like rock n roll. Don't be shy!!!!

I like it --don't be shy. My problem is I could be very shy and self concious.wink

I know other people may not like children's songs, but I work with children, so could i request some children songs?

If I have the music, just in regular music, how do I know how to start playing? e.g., up bow, down bow, slur, etc?

Yes ... if you look at the score for Over the Rainbow, you see there's a note carried across 2 bars, with an up bow symbol on the first bar, and a bracketed down bow symbol on the second.  So if you're smooth you can play a long uninterrupted note while changing direction midway.

Ok for some, the rest of us have to work at it.

Works well!  All that's missing is confidence.  Nice intonation.

Also nice to see you using the full bow length.

Good job Robyn,

Thanks for posting. Takes courage. Lot's of great things. Nice relaxed bowing. I look forward to seeing more videos.

  • Raise the 3rd finger in measure 14 quite a bit for the G#
  • Turn your right hand counter clockwise so that the fingers are laying on the stick a little more instead of only holding with the finger tips.

For now I am just playing two notes, there is enough other stuff in the music to keep me busy pulling my hair out.drooling I am scrolling down to have a look at your video. I am guessing you are on dial-up. I was on dial-up for a long time, very frustrating. Most web sites assume you have high speed and make you sit through a long flash animation just so you can click "enter"...yay!

Very cool! I am glad I am not the only "Over The Rainbow" Fan. I could hear the words as you played. Your video gives me ideas to overcome my problems in the song. Thanks for putting yourself out there! Smile Robyn, you're on the "net". It's like tv, but on demand!

Keep up the hard work,

Dave

Way to go Robyn, I'm like the rest of you just learning Over The Rainbow also. Love the song and so does my wife, she actually liked hearing me practice it. https://fiddlerman.com/wp-cont.....umbsup.gif

cheerleader

Thank you so much guys, I was a little afraid to turn on the computer this morning because I knew you'd all have seen my effort.

@Oliver ... you're damned right, this instrument scares the poop out of me, you will all know when I've got some confidence.

@Dave ... thanks mate, your turn, let's see you smile while you're recording this tune.

I will definitely take seriously all comments and suggestions.  Maybe when I've ironed out a few more problems I'll do an update.

I love you all.

Now I've got a message from Youtube:

Your video, Over the Rainbow, may have content that is owned or licensed by EMI Publishing.

Do we need to get permission before we try playing a tune?

Gimme a break.

Just set the permissions to unlisted and maybe change the name to "Over The Rainbow Cover" or something like that...

Btw, great job on the recording :) (I can't say anything else that the others haven't already said ;) Looking forward for more recordings from all of us.

Pierre, maybe we should make a Forum Category named "Upload your progress" ;) but NOT "Show Off" lol

Hard to say.  I'm sure Fiddlerman has a better answer.

There is a lot of "Rainbow" on the internet in various forms.  I wonder why they would single you out?  dunno

I have actually never seen that warning before. I wouldn't worry about it since you are not uploading anything owned by anyone else.

I do however like Daniels idea about adding cover to the end of the title.
