Am I alone in thinking the cello has been used quite often for visual (as well as acoustic) atmosphere in the movies? I was watching Midsomer Murders the other day and a woman was playing the cello at a commune in a stately home, and it reminded me of a few other such scenes - I think Billion Dollar Brain comes to mind (I must watch that again) and the Witches of Eastwick. Although there are also some less successful ones, such as the L-Word (Amy Ziff). If I owned a stately home, I'd buy a cello, as well as the usual pianos, but, along with the pianos, the hulking great thing wouldn't leave the place!
