Learning a new instrument you just really have to take your time and feel how the notes work. A violin neck just doesn't have the room for frets. You really need to use your ears.

A great way to practice is to really focus on your hand positions. In first position practice the first five notes of the scale on each string. Both major and minor. And practice along with recorded scales not just looking at sheet music.

That would be a great candid camera stunt Dennis. LOL
Great idea.

I can't play a flat to save my life, but the sharps are my best friends. My husband bought me little tiny colored dots with tape on the back of them to stick in the flat spots. I used my chromatic tuner to find the note, placed the dot, then checked to make sure I had it in the right spot. Now I hit the flats just fine. At some point, I will take them off, but not until my fingers listen to my brain a bit better. facepalm

That's nice. Use it long enough to find the notes and memorize where your fingers go then take them off.
You should be fine.

I  prefer to go without tape.  But that is just me.  It may seem harder at first but I prefer to focus on intonation as best I can.. But as someone mentioned earlier, tape may be okay as long as you don't become dependent on it.

Hey! Sporksies

Were you just kidding about flats and sharps? A sharp is another notes flat.

Right! Or did I missunderstand something?dazed

LOL.. no, I wasn't kidding. My fingers naturally land on the higher note spots. The way my brain is geared, it just does it. I might be a lost case. tongue

I hope you're not as old as me, springer.   Don't let age stop you.
