My hubby came home Thursday and after dinner started to play guitar about the time I was going to practice fiddle. He asked if I could play G,A,D and C and if I could improve to an old David Allan Coe tune. Yah, riiiiight. He plays by ear. I have to know the notes. Didn't work out too good.
But I remembered the video on one note blues - I can hang with that. So I played the video for him and asked if he could do a blues riff like in the track. It was kinda fun for bow practice and we got a good laugh at of my first attempts at vibrato and slides. Ponticello - so that's what its called when I get that "dirty" sound by bowing too close to the bridge. I meant to do that.
It wasn't going to win us a slot on America's Got Talent, but we had fun.
After that, I tried to get him to get a note out of the fiddle. It was harder than he thought and was pretty amazed at how far I'd come in a bit over a week.

NewFiddlerGirl that is very cool.
My husband also plays guitar by ear and he'll say 'just pick out this tune' (yea... right. like you I play by sheet music) But I found if I start by just shadowing him playing the root of each chord, then sometimes the 3rd or 5th, it actually starts to sound like real music!
Congrats on the jam session... Keep it up!

To just do that and improve with the hubby is admirable!! Excellent!!! Glad that worked for you. I hope that I can remove the proverbial stick .. and get to do some improve type jamming. I am glued to sheet music.... but I am ever so thankful that I can somewhat decipher it now and play from sheet. Little steps....

Taught my better half twinkle twinkle to pick out on guitar. Did a duet that that wasn't half bad. I'll have to try picking out the major notes in a piece and the 3rd and 5th and see if that helps. My next goal is the 5 note blues scale. Even if I can just run a few creative scales - the "odd" sounds just add color to the blues. Or so I'm told...
