Has anyone got any ideas for a decent and most of all cheap pedal, my amp has a lot of effects built in but not compressor, need a simple to use good looper as well, any thoughts.?

@stringy -
Do you want the Compressor pedal to play Violin live with others? ...for recording? Or, did you need it to play your other instruments?
I didn't feel I needed one for playing with the pre-amp on my my violins & I do have some compression available in amp patches - figured I might only need it in multi-track recording & would deal with that in DAW.
I have read that most multi-effects pedals have compression - OR, since you also like to sing, maybe consider something like the TC-Helicon VoiceLive Play Acoustic Guitar and Vocal Effects Processor Pedal. Reverb, Delay, Chorus, EQ, and compression... there's more & LOOPING, plus vocal effects, too. MUCH more effects & features - for probably about the same price as a compressor pedal & looper!
You'll have two voices of harmony and two voices of doubling always in perfect tune using the RoomSense microphones or auto chord detection from the guitar input.
I 1st got the 'Ditto+ Looper', but then had a chance to buy a demo 'Boss RC-5 Loop Station Compact Phrase Recorder Pedal', at a reduced price (wish I would've got it 1st) - does WAY more than the Ditto+. ...haven't been feeling well for a while now, so haven't played around with it yet.

For recording and a bit of live as well Emily, I find if I have the volume above certain levels on the amp, it's really catching squeaks from the strings, partly due to needing new strings and also partly due to bad technique, which I am putting down to not having much experience on the leccy fiddle yet, fairly good excuse
anyway I thought a compressor would take the top edge off the sound, what do you reckon?
Sorry to hear about you feeling a bit unwell hope it isn't anything serious and hope it improves.

A bit late, but agree that it would be EQ to take the top end off. A compressor would actually make the noise you are trying to get rid of worse. What a compressor does is reduce dynamic range.
For an electric violin, an EQ can do wonders. On a 4 string you can shelve everything below 180hz which will reduce some of the piezo bow noise. You can roll off a lot of high end noise as well, though that cutoff frequency can vary depending on instrument, etc.
Without hearing the squeaks, it could be feedback in to the piezo too, especially if it's an acoustic violin fitted with one (solid body instruments are less prone to that). In that case it's more positioning of the speaker relative to the instrument, though sometimes EQ can help there as well.
But I will say this: There is absolutely NO pedal, plugin or effect that will make up for technique. I spent too much money in the past learning that particular lesson.
